Posting Directly from AOL Pictures

Over at Magic Smoke, Journals Editor Joe points out that now you can directly link pictures from AOL Pictures, which was something you couldn't do before. This is useful because, among other things, pictures uploaded there don't count against the total FTP space you have in your Hometown account. It also means that you don't have to show them only as the thumbnails -- all you have to do is copy the URL that AOL Pictures gives you for your photo. Head to Joe's for the details.

For those of you who have a little more experience with HTML, I'd like to note that you're not confined to using only the photo size options Joe mentions in his "how to" -- You can also define the size of the picture by using the "height" and "width" commands in HTML. For example, I defined the picture above to be 450 pixels across and 299 pixels high with the following html (note: I trimmed the actual URL for space):

<img src="http://links.pictures.aol.com/pic?id=a080-ezd;size=l" height="299" width="450">

Two things to keep in mind here:

1. If you don't want your picture to look distorted, know the proportions of the picture first. Most digital pictures come out of the camera 4x3, which is that for every three units it is tall, it's four units across (so a picture 300 pixels high will be 400 pixels across). Some cameras (like my Nikon) will make the proportion slightly wider: 4.5x3. If you know the proportions of the picture, you can size them appropriately. I personally avoid all math by sizing all my pictures either was 400x300 or 450x299.

2. If you do resize your photos, you're probably better off not resizing them to be larger than the photo you uploaded, otherwise they're going to look blocky.

In any event it's nice to have another option for posting and presenting your pictures on AOL Journals.

    "If you have the time and inclination, the safest thing is always to resize the photo to the space that you're putting it in."

    This I agree with whole-heartedly.

    John -- it may be a Mac/PC thing (since you're a Mac guy now and all) when it comes to jaggies; I think the Mac handles downsized (vs. resized photos) a little better than the PC.

    If you have the time and inclination, the safest thing is always to resize the photo to the space that you're putting it in. -- Joe

    Marie: Correct!

    Tee: You'll get jagged edges if you don't have the proportions correct. But as you can see above, correct proportions don't present the dreaded jaggies.

    I will note that the options AOL Pictures gives you in terms of sizes should be sufficient for most folks; this is for folks who want pictures a particular size.
