Kids on swings, fireworks, barbeques and volleyball games: What else could it be but July 4th? And to get you in the spirit of the day, here's your Weekend Assignment:
Weekend Assignment 118: Share some favorite memories of July 4th. You can do it by telling a story or showing some of your favorite pictures of the day -- or both! Pretty simple, because, after all, all of here in the US have lots of July 4th memories.
For those of you in Canada, your favorite July 1st memories will do just fine.
Extra credit: Note your other favorite historical event that happened on July 4th (here's a list). Birthdays/deaths of notable people count as well.
My favorite memory of July 4th was when I was seven, which was the year of the US bicentennial (30 years ago! Gaaaaaah!). We were visiting with my aunt and we went to the park, and I remember trying to wrap the idea of what the bicentennial was around my little head. I don't recall doing a particularly good job of that, but I do remember getting one of those bicentennial quarters to spend on candy and then not -- because I figured those bicentennial quarters were probably special and I should hang on to it.
Now, as it happens, right after I wrote that lest sentence I looked into the glass where I keep my change and plucked out a bicentenntial quarter in less than two seconds, so in hindsight, perhaps I shouldn't have worried about it. But when you're seven, you just don't know. So I skipped the candy and kept the quarter.
It's funny the little things you remember after all those years. Nevertheless, that's a pretty vivid memory for me of the bicentennial, and I clearly remember holding the quarter in my hand and thinking -- neat! -- and that being the thing that helped me get what the bicentennial was all about.
Extra credit: The Mars Pathfinder landing on Mars on July 4, 1997. Because I'm a space geek. Sue me.
