So, How Bad is the Storm?

You can keep your fancy-schmancy Doppler radar -- all I need gauge the severity of a thunder storm is the location of my dog; the nearer she is to me (or Krissy, is she is available), the worse the storm is. That's because my dog -- from a breed bred to hunt bears -- is deathly afraid of storms and need to be reassured that, in fact, the house won't be blown over by the rumbly horrible noises outside.

When it's just a little thunderstorm, she only has to be on the same floor as you. A moderate storm requires her to be in the same room. And when it's bad, she will try to curl herself up into a protective ball under my desk, as she did just after this picture was taken. She's there now, lying on my feet so I can't get up and abandon her. Crafty dog.

The good news is that this particular storm, while severe in intensity, is already heading off toward the east. Hopefully soon it will be safe for my dog to come out again. I mean, I hope so. My feet have fallen asleep.

I just want to say that I'm very impressed how CLEAN your desk looks...  Your dog looks so nice and fluffy too...  I'm truly impressed...  You would make any Portuguese grandma impressed.  Julie :)

yeah my dog does the same thing, but he hides under my sisters bed,  and out of 3 rooms in the house he only comes in me and my sisters room, my mom said it casue he feels safe.

My dog never had this problem until one time I made the mistake of petting him during a thunderstorm. Now he knows how to get gobs of attention--feign timidity during a storm.

I think she's just looking for a roof over her head, even if it's an interior one... probably leftover instink from when it was a wild dog. You just happen to be sitting next to the shelter.

Tell your dog that my cat is usually the first one outside the second the lightning starts flashing, the thunder starts booming and the skies open up and unleash a torrential downpour.  That should set her straight.
