Hearing Stabbed in The Heart -- Damone

A Laptop in the Sun

Reminder: When you go on vacation, you should actually, you know, go on vacation:

The number of Americans who work during their vacations has nearly doubled in the last decade, with the laptop computer replacing the cellular phone as the most useful tool for working on holiday.

Some 43 percent of office workers said they work on vacation, compared with 23 percent in a survey taken in 1995, said the poll conducted for Grand Rapids, Michigan-based Steelcase Inc., a designer and maker of office furniture.

Overall, roughly one in four employees said they spent three or more hours working during vacation. Most said they were committed to the job or had a pressing assignment, while 10 percent cited an inability to relax until things were taken care of.

I'm generally of the opinion that one of the things people need to be able to do is tell their work that they are simply not available -- that there's more to work than life. The irony, of course, is that I myself take my laptop on vacations, and have been known to, say, post Journal entries when I'm having my rest and relaxation. Yeah, I'm a hypocrite. What are you going to do. On the other hand, blogging's not exactly super-hard; uploading pictures of my vacation is something I'd do anyway, I just get to call it work.

How about you? When you go on vacation, do you bring along a little work? Or  when you're gone, are you totally gone?

I've heard that there's a new laptop that's readable in the sun.  Do you know of one?

I'm a journalist by trade and a writer (fiction, nonfiction, poetry) on the side. There's no such thing as down time in my world. Even on vacation, I bring a laptop, several reporter's notebooks, writing-related books/magazines, my press pass, my cell phone and a camera. One never knows wheen/whre inspiration is going to strike or news is going to occur.

I'm gone. Prior to my having children, I wouldn't even answer my husband's calls if I was on a Girl's Night Out.
