Hearing I Can't Tell You Why -- The Eagles

The Best Basketball Scam Ever

I'm the first to admit that professional sports is an alien country to me -- I enjoy it when I'm there to see it, but otherwise I don't really think much about it -- but this story makes me giggle. It's about how two guys in LA get millions in NBA television revenue every year -- and yet they don't own an NBA team and never have. Meet Ozzie and Dan Silna, previous owners of the Spirits of St. Louis, a pro basketball team I'd never heard of before this article, and how a single line on a contract with the NBA has netted these guys more money than most of us will ever see in this and our next six lifetimes. I want a contract like that.

Hey!  If Paris Hilton can try to copyright the phrase "That's Hot," I'm thinking you could try and copyright the phrases "Whatever" and "By the way."  You'd make a killing, and you'd finally be able to fulfill your life-long dream of having a Little Debbie factory built in your backyard.

The Spirits were an old ABA team, and must have worked themselves into the contract when the ABA and NBA merged. Always read (and think about) the fine print, kids.

The best player (by far) on the Spirits was Marvin Barnes, who was known as "Bad News." Marvin is a Providence kid who is famous for putting a towel over his head and freebasing on the Celtics bench.
