Dogs Vs. Cats: The Verdict!

Last week's Weekend Assignment asked you to take a stand and choose between dogs and cats. We got a lot of participation -- and each species had its own core of supporters. Who came away with the title of AOL Journals' Best Friend? Let's go to the vote:

vs.
The Ultimate Showdown!

Dogs: 23 Votes!

Some of the comments:

"Dogs are easier to take places. They can walk on leashes if trained. They can be therapy dogs....they certainly are therapy dogs to me."

"You can have a universe full of cats if you like, but if it's got to be one or the other, give me a universe of dogs any day."

"Dogs have been a major focus of my life in the past as a breeder, a competitor in AKC obedience and USA Schutzhund and as a member of local clubs in Maine and Vermont. Cats have been a footnote. That's as it should be."

"Then there’s my favorite advantage to dogs: they scare the hell out of burglars and unwanted guests knocking on my door."

Cats: 27 Votes!

Some of the comments:

"My cat rules, because he pats my tears when I cry, growls at George Bush, when he is on the TV, sits on my feet when they are painful and swollen, and he is a great listener."

"I love animals, from hamsters to elephants, and lately I've been crazy about really big dogs (Have you ever been leaned on by a 150-pound Shiloh shepherd who wants to be scritched behind the ears?) -- but I confess, I have cats. It's the whole self-cleaning, don't-have-to-be-walked thing."

"Naturally I vote for cats. Why? They are the perfect lazy woman's pet. "

"I have to say, cats are #1 in my book. I think its because of their independence, their personality, and their exotic looks that draws me to them."

"Cats... can be trained to use the toilet.  And flush it.  I've seen the videos on TV."

And there you have it -- perhaps the dogs will have their day, but today, the cat's in the cradle, and the cradle says "AOL-J's Favorite." But of course, the nice things is that in the real world, it's not a "one or the other" sort of thing: You can have both, and we do.

Thanks to everyone who put in a vote, and thanks to Monponsett for such a fun topic!

This is an age-old and very fun debate about our two best furry friends. I choose dogs.  After all, if I'm hurt and lost in the woods, who would I prefer to send for help?  Rin-Tin-Tin or Garfield?

I've assembled some really fun quotes on this subject, and my visitors have added many more, in addition to their own shouts about why they believe DOGS are best ... or they take the other side and insist that CATS are better!

You can add your own position in the duel, add your favorite cat quotes (by others or yourelf), add your own links (several link lists, so use the right one) - and add a link for THIS neat blog and this page with the results of that fun assignment - And also add your favorite dog or cat YouTube videos... well, lots of fun on this very subject at "DOGS vs CATS" - http://www.squidoo.com/dogsvscats

I'll bet there are some dog or cat quotes you haven't heard before!
