Hearing Why Me -- Planet P

Hold The Phone: Pluto's a Planet

Good news for fans of small, icy worlds: Looks like Pluto is going to maintain its planetary status:

An international panel has unanimously recommended that Pluto retain its title as a planet, and it may be joined by other undersized objects that revolve around the sun.

Some astronomers had lobbied for reclassifying Pluto because it is so tiny. And at least one major museum has excluded Pluto from its planetary display. But sources tell NPR that under a proposal to be presented at a big meeting of astronomers in Prague next week for a vote, Pluto would become part of a new class of small planets. Several more objects could be granted membership.

Mmmm... more planets. The plan is to create a new classification of planet that Pluto would be a leading example of. Some people think this is a "demotion," but I think it's simply a recognition that there are different types of planets.

Speaking as someone who has written a book on astronomy, I'm pleased we've got this issue licked and now can move on to more important things, like, uh... well, okay, you got me there. There was nothing more important in astronomy than this. Ever.

Pluto's a rock, and it should be destroyed.  After all, you know what they say: "No one noticed the rock."  And, look what happened there?

Sorry... I couldn't resist.  Please don't hurl flaming kittens at me, John.

Yes, that's really important about Pluto.  But how about the meteor shower this weekend, LOL?
