Hearing 1979 -- Smashing PumpkinsBecause Nothing Says "Scary" Like Antibiotic-Resista
Here's some swell news: Antibitoic-resistant staph infections are on the rise. Yes, super-staph, formerly largely confined to hospitals and prisons, has made a break for the big time out here in the big wide world. Just you want: infections that just won't heal. How did this happen? One guess:
"This underscores the need to avoid overuse of antibiotics in general so as to avoid the development of antibiotic resistance," said Dr. Greg Anderson, at the Mayo Clinic.
Yes, indeed. As I've said before, this is one of the reasons why we don't have "antibiotic" soap here in the Scalzi household: soap is antibiotic enough, and when a nasty, nasty bug comes to wipe all of us out, I can say (no doubt as I cough up a lung) that it wasn't my fault. It'll be a small comfort, to be sure. But a comfort nonetheless.

Staph infections can be some serious stuff. My son had a poison ivy blister on his finger that got infected and a red line started traveling up his arm. Took him to the doctor and was told the infection was on it's way to his brain. Had the anti-biotic not worked...he'd have 9 fingers. All turned out well, he can flip me the bird with both hands.
