Hearing Something That You Said -- The Bangles
This week's Weekend Assignment revels in the glories of where you are, and was suggested by JLester961:
Your Weekend Assignment #126: What is the most interesting thing about where you live? "Thing" in this case would be a famous landmark, a famous current celebrity or historical personage from your home town or county, a notable celebration or sports event -- basically, anything that makes where you're from interesting an unique.
Extra Credit: Are there any books that feature your home town (or someplace nearby) in any way?

Bradford Ohio, which is where I live, has fabulous sunsets, like the one you see above, and also a very nice annual pumpkin festival which is famous in the local area, but personally, I think the most interesting thing about where I live is the fact that we have quite a few Amish and Mennonites living in the area, and true to what many people seem to think of these groups, they really do live simply and ride in buggies and do all those sort of things.
I find it interesting not because I think of them as some sort of touristy thing ("look! We got Amish!") but because when you see a Amish buggy clopping down a road, with a family inside either going to or coming from services, it's a reminder that there are all sorts of ways to live one's life, and many of those ways are quite different -- and yet, for those who live them, quite satisfying as well. Let's face it, it does take more than small level of committment to live as the Amish and many Mennonites do, and I do admire how they make it work for them. It's good to see such a very different way of life, and see it on a daily basis.
Also, Annie Oakley is from Darke County, which is where Bradford is. That's kinda cool.
Extra Credit: So far as I know, Bradford, Ohio doesn't really appear in any books... except mine: In Old Man's War, the book open up in Harris Creek Cemetary, which exists in the real world about a mile from my home. Folks in Bradford have picked up the book and been surprised to see their hometown in a science fiction book. But I think, well, why not? Also, it's nice to see where I live survive so far into the future.
Your turn: Tell us what's so special about your hometown. Write it up in your blog or Journal, and then come back here to leave a link!
