Hearing Bad Boyfriend -- Garbage
Here's an interesting development in the musical world:
Vivendi Universal, the world's biggest music group, has signed a deal to make its music catalogue available on a free legal downloads service.
Under the agreement, Spiralfrog will offer Universal's songs online in the US and Canada.
New York-based Spiralfrog will launch its service in December and make its money by carrying adverts on the site.
The article also notes that some people are skeptical as to how something like this will actually make money for the musicians involved, to which I say: Uh, yeah. Giving away music is all very nice, especially if it's legal, but people getting paid for their work is also nice. It's one of the sad realities that if someone is going to get screwed by this sort of deal, it's probably going to be the guy actually making the music.
This is why, incidentally, I keep paying for my music -- if nothing else, I know I gave some money to the music makers. But if they can make this work and everyone's happy, hey -- free is good.
Your thoughts?

I think it's important to note that the free songs CANNOT be burned to CD. They can only be transferred to a portable device. So, there are still limits with the free songs.
