Hearing Poisoning Pigeons in the Park -- Tom Lehrer

Me, Blathering

So, wanna see what I look like and talk like when I'm giving a lecture? Cincinnati's public television station came down to a talk I was giving on science fiction and taped me as I blathered on the topic for more than an hour, and has now made a streaming version of the video available online. Among other things, I give two readings during the course of the lecture, including part of the first chapter of Old Man's War and a short story you won't otherwise find anywhere online. Here's a link to a page that will pop up a standalone video player; I'm currently the top-most entry. If you prefer to have the video play in a browser window, here's a link for that.

My observations on myself -- I need to say "uhhhh" less. Other than that? Reasonably decent blatheration.

I watched the video... all of it! I loved hearing you speak about where science fiction has gone, addressing the Firefly/Serenity event (why it didn't take off as it should have), and your references to Orson Scott Card and Heinlein... my favorites among science fiction. There were others... your blathering was interesting, I thought. You did very well, and all of it organized, without note cards...sounded like your audience there enjoyed it all as well. Thanks for sharing. I'm waiting for your newest book to be released. Again, congratulations on the Joseph Campbell Award. I thought you should have won the Hugo. Bea

They gave the Hugo to Robert Charles Wilson, actually, for his novel "Spin." That award was, in fact, richly deserved, and Bob, who has been nominated for the award a number of times before, was due the recognition. I was delighted to see him win it; by that time I had won the Campbell and was happy to let the Hugo get past me. This year, at least.

    Today, Cincinnati... tomorrow, Cleveland!

Even a juggernaut is slow outof the gate, and he usually doesn't have a cool new best author award.

Who'd they give the Hugo(?) to? Probably some zipperhead who didn't deserve it as much as you. You should have had Athena go over aznd spill fruit juice on his shirt right before the awards.
