Hearing Lonely Machine -- Gramophone
"The Wave" -- you know it if you've ever been to a sporting event -- has turned 25 this last week. And apparently there is a particular person who invented it:
"It's just a fun little thing,'' said George Henderson, the 62-year-old professional cheerleader known as Krazy George, whose roots go back to San Jose State. ``And I'm glad I invented it.''
Henderson's renown as the wave's inventor is pegged to its appearance at the Oakland Coliseum during an A's-Yankees playoff game on Oct. 15, 1981. His standing has been disputed in some circles -- the University of Washington, for example, contends the wave first appeared at a Huskies-Stanford homecoming game two weeks later -- but Henderson is adamant and cites video footage to back it up.
If anything, Henderson said this week, he created the wave a few years earlier, at an NHL game in Denver while working for the Colorado Rockies, the franchise at the time. It started out as a cheer in which he had three sections rise and sit as they each yelled one word of "Go, Rockies, Go.''
George Henderson: Great American? Or someone who deserves to be hunted with large dogs through the end of his natural life? I know my opinion. What's yours?

Great American? Questionable. Deserves to be hunted to his death by a pack of large dogs? Hardly. The question is not what George Henderson deserves. The questions is, what does the sporting event attending public deserve? While it sure is fun to participate in a wave of enthusiasm in a sold out crowd at a big game, I, the sporting event attending public that I am talking about, deserve to NOT be sworn at by some drunken frat boy for declining to participate in his attempt to start a wave in a half empty stadium at a garbage game in the final weeks of an unsuccessful season. Good ol' George Henderson fully deserves to sink into the unknown mediocrity he is so desperately trying to avoid these days. Stop struggling, George, and let the cold waters of time close over your head. It really is a peaceful way to go.

Hey John
I have actually met George Henderson (Krazy George) and he is a really neat guy. I believe that he did indeed invent "The Wave" no doubt in my mind at all. I believe, I believe! :) Seriously, he is a crowd pleaser, and a wonderful part of the memories I have of A's games of the past. :) Yeah...he is a Great American.
Always, Carly -
Being a MAJOR (she says with the red embarassement of one who has no shame) fan of the REDSKINS for most of my life. I can assure you that there was no feeling quite as exhilarating as the frenzy that could be created on Game Day in RFK Stadium on the banks of the Anacosta River in NE Washington, DC. The floorboards were made of metal and the deal was to kick them into a roar to psych out the other team (now Jack Kent Cooke can turn over in his grave if he wishes but I personally think the team's SPIRIT left when we left that stadium).
So, told you that to tell you this ... YEAH, I LOVE THE WAVE ... mainly in burgundy and gold ... but when you're from a place where grown men dress up like women and wear hogs noses, what's not to love about the wave? And true some of them boys paint themselves and there is on african american who always had his headdress on EVERY game!
This is an affirmative vote for the WAVE! woo hoo. -
Where do I go for the Monday Photo Shoot? I thought it was here but have not been able to find it since Color Opposites in mid-September. I'll check back the comments in a bit to look for an answer. Thanks.

Either that or a personal tsunami is how that guy's life would have ended if I were God.
