Hearing Ironic - Alanis Morrisette

Things I didn't know about Tennessee: Apparently, the state has a tax stamp to certify that you've paid taxes on your illegal substances. Get arrested on a drug charge, and your drugs haven't got a stamp affixed to them, and suddenly your penalties go way, way up. Is this constitutional? Well, in fact, that's an issue being argued right now. But it is fairly amusing. And if it turns out to be constitutional, there's another reason for you not to do illegal drugs -- the tax consequences. Unless, of course, you do get your tax stamps.
Think illegal substances should be taxed?

Of course... they're probably paying a few hundred K to staff and stock this effort, while- correct me if I'm wrong- the schools are among the worst in the country.
If marijuana were legal and taxed, I'd have put like 5 cops on the street in my time, fighting real crime.... instead of wasting their time chasing me around. My man Big L could have funded that NATO action in Kosovo.
I'll be interested to hear from my hep friends in Tenny, to see if the drug prices go up now that respectable crack dealers must register their product. I bet the guy from Dad's Tomato Garden would know. -
My problem with the tax comes down to this:
There should be no law concerning illegal drugs that one can be in COMPLIANCE with as long as the person possesses the very drugs that are illegal to begin with.
As I said over in my blog, if Tennessee wants to make extra money to fight drugs, then just add on the fines in the criminal part; that way, EVERYONE caught with the drugs has to pay up, not just the majority who aren't willing to pay a tax.

Like cigarettes and booze drugs shouldn't be taxed unless they are legal.

OK I didn't read the link, but would this mean the end user pays the taxes and your dealer would be tax exempt because his product is for resale?

Isn't this like setting up a pawn shop and spreading rumors about it being a fencing operation and waiting for the criminals to show up?
