Hearing Bad -- U2
Today's college students are even more egotistical twits than we were!
Today’s college students are more narcissistic and self-centered than their predecessors, according to a comprehensive new study by five psychologists who worry that the trend could be harmful to personal relationships and American society.
“We need to stop endlessly repeating ‘You’re special’ and having children repeat that back,” said the study’s lead author, Professor Jean Twenge of San Diego State University. “Kids are self-centered enough already.”
You know what's super-awesome about this? Dr. Twenge, who led this this study, went to college with me -- indeed, she was on the school newspaper staff when I was the editor-in-chief. She was not particularly narcissistic that I can recall. Me, on the other hand? Oh my God. Insufferable. Just ask my college girlfriend, she'll be more than happy to confirm this. More than happy.
Anyway, I think the interesting point here is that in an effort to raise a generation of kids who felt good about themselves we may be raising a generation of kids who feel good only about themselves, which is some irony. I can't help wonder if this is also part and parcel with the "helicopter parents" who swoop down and solve all their kids' problems for them.
I want my kid to feel good about herself; I also want her to understand feeling good about herself works better when she has healthy connections with others and her world. It's tricky stuff, this parenting thing. One day maybe I'll figure out, by which time, of course, I'll be done being a parent. Oh, the irony.

John, couldn't have said any of this better if I tried (although, I actually married my college girlfriend and was much more insufferable in high school).

I'd kill my own sister if the money was right.

While you may not be actively parenting, there's still self-imposed worry. Especially when they're 3000 miles away and totally on their own!
