Introducing Ficlets! Also, Some Changes

Hey folks: Have a seat, I need to tell you about some stuff.

A few months ago, AOL asked me to be one of the leaders and contributors for a neat site they'd thought up, in which people would write short short stories -- no longer than about 1,000 characters -- and then other folks could add to the stories, sending them off in new and unexpected directions. I thought this seemed like a pretty cool idea -- short, collaborative fiction! -- and I signed on for the experience.

Now that site is up: It's called Ficlets, and it had its official debut over the weekend at the South by Southwest Interactive show. We're very excited about the possibilities this site has, and how much fun it can be for folks to read and play in. This being a collaborative site, so much of its eventual success will depend on people taking part, so I hope you'll come by and be a part of it, by reading, commenting on and adding to stories, and by adding your own stories as well for other people to read and add to. We're still in the process of shaking the site down (we're doing a few updates today, in fact, so the site might be down for short periods of time today -- keep trying!), and we also welcome your input on what's working and what's not.

As for what I'm doing for Ficlets: Well, I'll be writing there in two ways. First, I'll be contributing to the Ficlets blog, in which I'll be highlighting groovy Ficlets folks have written, discussing writing and publishing in a general sense, and posting other writing-related material. I'll also be transferring the Wednesday author interviews over to the Ficlets blog. Second, I'll be writing Ficlets myself (here's one), to give folks what I hope are some interesting stories to play with. I'm having a ball with it, basically, and I'm looking forward to helping Ficlets grow and become a place for creative play online.

What does this mean for what I do here at By The Way? In one sense, not too much -- I'm still going to be writing here daily and doing what I've been doing here for the last three and a half years. By The Way is not going away. Yes, you're stuck with me, you are.

However, what it does mean is that I'll be splittingtime between By The Way and the Ficlets area. This means that I may post fewer entries here daily or possibly just post shorter entries, or some combination of the two. We'll see how it works out. I do promise that no matter what, By The Way is still going to be a lot of fun to visit on a daily basis. Because, you know, I want to have fun here on a daily basis. And that settles that.

So: Check out Ficlets, and keep coming back here. You'll find me at both from now on.

Sounds good John. However, it has been done before right here in J-land...did you ever read Journallandnovel?  There were about seven of us taking turns writing the stories and I think they were very good.  The site is still up but has not been added to in over a year...it was fun collabrating and I believe Ficlets will succeed...Sandi

I would rush right over - really! - but John wants me to get offline so we can check out of this hotel room and get on with the last day of our trip.  I'll catch this when I get home.
