Hearing Nothing at the moment

Computer dork that I am, I am fascinated by this Forbes slide show on the cheapest (new) computers you can buy, ranging in price from $85 to $300. At those prices you're not exactly going to get a super-powerful PC, which people probably know going in. But this is not to say you're not going to get innovate technology. The OLPC computer above, for example, is a little tech marvel, designed to be used in developing countries. Personally I intend to buy one (the US commercial version will probably cost less than $300) just to play with it and see what it can do. Hey, I already said I'm a dork.
Here's the actual story to accompany the slide show.

Hey John! Here's a story about how Intel is apparently trying to undermine the AMD-powered OLPC by putting out a cheaper version.

Kind of weird watching these two fight to see who can make the cheaper machine, isn't it?

Computers seem to be dropping in price every day. It's funny how you can buy a computer that 10 years ago would have cost 5 grand for less than 300 today. Funny thing is that people, on average, don't really do anything more advanced. Still just MS office and internet. http://dellcomputerdeals.blog

And it's pretty!

yeah, I just saw a special on TV tonight about that. One Laptop for Every Child is the program where it got its start. The maker's prediction is that they should sell for about $100 in the near, near future. Even kids in Cambodia, who had never even experienced electricity, were given one to use at school, and to take home, just to show how easily kids adapted to using them. The keypad is waterproof. I think it's a wonderful idea. I can see one on every desk of every American student some day. Bea
