Making a Buck in New York City

This is the sort of magazine package I could stare at for hours: A look at what it takes to make a buck in New York City, for everyone from cab drivers to four star restaurants to (appropriately enough) dollar stores. This sort of stuff is fascinating to me because I know I wonder how anyone in NYC can actually afford to live and work there. I mean, I love to visit. But I pay the same for my five acres and four bedrooms that someone in Park Slope pays for a crappy one bedroom walk-up. That's just not right.

Only the rich and famous has a car in Manhattan.  It has only been in the past 35 years that New York City has become an economic outcast.  Prior to 1975, it was affordable to live there.  Before Yuppism and BMW's.  When gas was $.99 a gallon.  A pack of cigarettes was $.60.  Then the New York Times was $.50.  It was $3.00 to go to the beach.

You could still purchase a home on Long Island for under $30,000.  Yes, you heard right.

If you knew where to shop in Manhattan, you could get great clothes for less than it cost at A&S.

I did the math once, and Alex Rodriguez of the Yankees gets paid a dollar per blink.

Ahhh... but it's about what is at your finger tips... No less than 50 museums, Broadway, and off Broadway, the restaurants, the shops etc....

People who live in Manhattan don't need cars, car ins, or gas...

    be well,
    Dawn
