Hearing I Know You -- Timewellspent

To The Rest Of The World We're The Backward Hicks

Think your broadband is fast? Think again:

The USA trails other industrialized nations in high-speed Internet access and may never catch up unless quick action is taken by public-policymakers, a report commissioned by the Communications Workers of America warns.

The median U.S. download speed now is 1.97 megabits per second — a fraction of the 61 megabits per second enjoyed by consumers in Japan, says the report released Monday. Other speedy countries include South Korea (median 45 megabits), France (17 megabits) and Canada (7 megabits).

"We have pathetic speeds compared to the rest of the world," CWA President Larry Cohen says. "People don't pay attention to the fact that the country that started the commercial Internet is falling woefully behind."

What he said. It does annoy me that I spend a lot of money for a top tier download speed (6 megabits) that would be considered a low-end speed in other parts of the world. The Asian geeks are laughing at me! And so are the European ones! (The Canadian ones are just having a slight chuckle).

How is your Internet speed these days. Is it fast enough for what you need? Or is the US online infrastructure letting you down?

Ha! At least you have decent internet speeds, we here in Australia are behind you guys!! Our Government is doing it's best to ignore the need for fast internet connections saying they plan to have Optic Fibre to the Node by sometime in the next 10-15 years (in Cities only - so me out here in the sticks getting my 1.5 will have to be happy with that!!) - sorry rant mode disengaged!

Phhhhhtttt.... I wish they would do something to get us at least in the running... Aren't we supposed to be on the leading edge on this stuff!?! Heck, I have to shoot my signal to a satellite if I want anything faster than dial-up. 'Course I do accept that living out in the country limits me, but still!

We got fiber in the neighborhood last year, and we're getting 15 megabits for about what we paid for six before. It's also more reliable; so much so that we finally ditched our backup dial-up account.

Having said that, it drives me up the wall that we can't get the same type of service they have in other countries. They have better wireless phone service as well. And I bet they pay less for both.
