Hearing Nothing at the moment
I'm on the move this weekend, and I like the gift theme that we started earlier this week with the Photo Shoot, so I thought I'd keep this Weekend Assignment short and simple:
Weekend Assignment #186: Talk about an unexpected gift that you've received. That gift could be anything big or small -- just something that you didn't see coming and/or from someone you would not have expected to get a gift from. Holiday/Birthday gifts can be included here, but gifts at unusual times are particularly good too.
Extra Credit: Have you ever given an unexpected gift?
The reason I thought of this particular Weekend Assignment is that I got this in the mail today:

I didn't order this book, and I know my wife didn't order this book, and I was pretty certain our daughter did not order this book. From whence did it come? Turns out that one of the readers of my personal blog, well-versed in my love for bacon, took it upon herself to send it to me, at least partly as a gag gift. On the other hand, it is a lovely books, with some really excellent bacon-related recipes in it, so I expect it will have some very practical applications in the Scalzi kitchen. Because, mmmmm... bacon. Seriously, bacon is what keeps me from going vegetarian.
So, yes. A surprise gift indeed, but a welcome one nonetheless.
For the unexpected gift I gave, there was this one time where a friend of mine was reminiscing on her blog about her best friend in middle school, and how she was really sorry she had lost contact with her and wondered where she was and what she was doing. Well, she named the friend, and armed with my extra-geekified online searching powers, I discovered the friend in question was now a doctor, and the only way to contact her was through her hospital beeper. So I sent a note to her beeper, telling her that my friend was looking for her and sending her the address of the blog post where she was being discussed. And they reconnected. Which I thought was a nice gift.
Your turn: Tell us about your unexpected gift. Any will do. Write it up in your own blog or journal and then come back to leave a link! And enjoy your weekend.

Standing out in my memory: a picture of Jesus, a postcard, and butter mints! Yes, there's a story about each one. - Karen
