Who Is This John Scalzi Person?

Picture from Hometown

John Scalzi was born on May 10, 1969, although his own memory of the event is sketchy and he has to go by what others tell him of the event. He grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles, and like many people his age from that area, had entire conversations that consisted of nothing more than variably-inflected uses of the word "dude." After graduating from the Webb School of California in 1987, he went to the University of Chicago, conveniently located in Chicago, where for the first time he saw buildings older than he was.

After graduating from Chicago with a degree in philosophy (dude!) he went back to California to watch movies for a living (no, really: He was the movie critic for the Fresno Bee newspaper). He stayed at the job long enough to propose to Laura Dern and to get married (but not to Laura Dern). In 1996, he left California to go to work for AOL. Many networked games of Quake followed. In 1998 he went freelance and now spends his time writing for anyone who pays him, which, interestingly, includes AOL. It's like he never left.

When he's not goofing off online, Scalzi writes books: Recent and upcoming titles include The Rough Guide to the Universe (an astronomy book), Book of the Dumb (a book on stupidity) and Old Man's War (a novel). You should buy all of these. He also reviews stuff for Official US PlayStation Magazine and for the Dayton Daily News, among others.

Scalzi lives in a teeny tiny little town in Ohio called Bradford, where a traffic jam is defined as three cars caught behind an Amish buggy. Scalzi lives there with his wife Kristine, daughter Athena (pictured), dog Kodi and cats Rex, Lopsided Cat, and Ghlaghghee (pronounced "fluffy"). He enjoys pie.

Well thanks for being born. I came in and well still around. For me in June 1946 but hell never did remember coming in although I will not know when I leave. Like your brief bio. Yep I was born in New Hampshire but grew up in Lynn ma. Went back to school at 38 and just before graduating divorced.

Told my ex before I was going to grad that most likely willgo to China and teach Engliush which I did along with Japan S Korea and Taiwan. Been in this city a number of years and like it. Teach at a univ and the kids are well dumber to dumber but who the hell cares. I am happy as a pissed off gorrilla but then live a care free life.
