AOL Journals: Magic Smoke

Hearing Cowboy Junkies, Bread and Wine Hi folks -- so, it may have been overshadowed by an numerical oddity that I was originally going to ignore (but I will get to in a little bit), but today is the anniversary of the invasion of Normandy: D-Day, June 6, 1944.

So, I was originally going to ignore all the silly 6/6/06 stuff, especially since it's been co-opted by so many marketing folks. It's now only marginally less silly (but definitely more "selly") than the 5/25/06 comet-induced-tsunami-that's-gonna-kill-us-thing from two weeks back.

However, it looks pretty impossible to avoid; I ran a trend search over at BlogPulse, comparing the terms "D-Day" and "666" to see which was more blogged about:

As you can see, the term "666" overtook "D-Day" this week. So it goes.

I was able to glean a few items about the whole 666 thing that I found interesting:

• Via Al's Morning Meeting: There's an article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch with some thoughts about the origins of 666 as the "number of the beast", and how it may mean something different from what people take it to mean these days.
• An AP story in Newsvine tells us that the number six, pronounced in the Chinese Hokkien dialect, sounds a lot like "luck", which means that today is an extra-lucky day for many, resulting in lots of 666 weddings among Hokkien speakers.

Anyway, as the saying goes, knowing is half the battle.

  especially since in many early manuscripts the number is 616....oh those crazy evangelicals...what will they think of next?

  yeah well.....666 is the mark of the beast.  but i don't see how today's date which would correct at 6-6-06 has anything to do with anything.
