TAOS CITY COUNCIL - 11/25/03
On November 25, 2003, the Taos City Coucil will meet to decide whether or not the bronze memorial of Padre Martinez as "La Honra de Su País" will be placed in the Plaza of Taos (instead of in Santa Fe). The Legislative Subcommittee of seven legislators did not approve the originally proposed site of the state capitol. The Subcommittee did not state why they did not choose to recommend that location. Perhaps they judged that the proposed site might not receive the necessary 2/3 plurality of both houses of the legislature. Nevertheless, they recommended other sites including the Taos Plaza. The Taos location is favored by several members of the Memorial Committee who consider it an even more apt location. Although Padre Martinez is indeed "New Mexico's greatest son," as Fray Angelico Chavez called him in <My Penitente Land,> he is first of all CURA DE TAOS.
