Nebraskans Lead the Way
In November Nebraskans will vote on a measure that would protect disabled patients like Terri Schiavo, and make sure that people with feeding tubes are not denied food and water on the "whim" of a guardian.
While some states use guardians to protect the incapacitated who haven’t made their wishes known, Nebraska’s Humane Care Initiative takes a different approach.
“What Nebraska is trying to say is that the hospitals and the other institutions need to err on the side of life rather than just the whim of a guardian.”
If Nebraska is successful, it could be a model for other states.
