The First Time Terri's Family and Friends Touched My Heart
by Janice Sanford

Just caring people. Who couldn't understand why Terri couldn't
go home with her "family."
It has been almost three yrs since The First Time I met The Schindlers . When I took these pictures Bob, Mary, Bobby, and Suzanne had reason to hope. Their daughter/sister Terri had been spared.
When these pictures were taken the Schindlers still had reason to smile. On October 21, 2003, the Florida Legislature passed Terri's Law and Governor Jeb Bush signed Executive Order Number 03-201.
... B. Effective immediately, all medical facilities and personnel providing medical care for Theresa Schiavo, and all those acting in concert or participation with them, are hereby directed to immediately provide nutrition and hydration to Theresa Schiavo by means of a gastronomy tube, or by any other method determined appropriate in the reasonable judgment of a licensed physician.
C. While this order is effective, no person shall interfere with the stay entered pursuant to this order.
D. This order shall be binding on all persons having notice of its provisions.
E. This order shall be effective until such time as the Governor revokes it.
F. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement shall serve a copy of this Executive Order upon the medical facility currently providing care for Theresa Schiavo.

Thinking back now on all that Terri, her mother(Mary), her father(Bob), her brother(Bobby), and her sister(Suzanne) were forced to endure at the hands the Florida's judicial system and the federal judicial system it breaks my heart to know that Terri's Case didn't fall through the crack but was put on the judicial court to boil, by basically the same group of people who were involved in the Estelle Browning case: George Felos, James Barnhill, James Avery, etc.
In 1990, in Guardianship of Browning v. State of Florida, the Florida supreme court cited a state constitutional right to privacy and ruled caregivers may withhold food and water from an incapacitated person even when death is not imminent.
The Estelle Browning ruling in effect places anywhere from 14,000 to 35,000 disabled peoples' lives at risk every year in the United States.
Note: Estelle Browning died in 1989 with her feeding tube still in place.
According to an article written by the late Dr. Ronald Cranford:
Multi-society Task Force on the Persistent Vegetative State estimated in 1994 that there were 10,000 to 25,000 adults and 4,000 to 10,000 children in persistent vegetative states in the United States.AMA (Virtual Mentor) Clinical Pearl
Terri's fate was sealed by Judge George Greer and then locked by Dr. Cranford:
You're not going to find one credible neurologist in the United States who is going to sign an affidavit off a videotape in my opinion, so I don't think they mean anything at all. You can get 50, you can get 500 pro-life doctors signing affidavits. Honestly in my opinion, Aaron, I don't think that means anything. -Ronald Cranford
Dr. Cranford wouldn't have thought it meant anything if "500 pro-life doctors" had signed affidavits. Was the pro-death movement the driving force behind the Terri schiavo case?
CRANFORD: Well, I've testified in eight major right to die cases in the United States all the way (UNINTELLIGIBLE) the U.S. Supreme Court and my record is 100 percent that every case I've testified in, whoever I testified for, the court has agreed with my diagnosis.

Because of people like Greer, Felos, Whittimore, Barnhill, Avery, and a willing spouses like Michael Schiavo , a disabled American was judged on her quality of life and sentenced to death.
As individuals ,groups of people, or as a nation of Americans we can not roll back the clock and undo what has been done to the Schindler family. By changing laws we can't bring Terri back but we can insure that never again will a disabled human being be openly sacrificed in the name of " death with dignity."
