The Problem with Educational Vouchers
Paul Blair had a letter published in The New York Sun that makes an important point about a flaw in vouchers for education:
- People should be free to use their own money to educate their children in whatever beliefs they deem appropriate. The use of tax credits is an entirely appropriate way to allow them to retain more of their own money for this purpose. The use of vouchers—subsidies extracted from others by force--is not. [P. Blair, Blaine in Florida, The New York Sun, 8/23/2004; via HBL]
When education reform focuses on how to remove force (a.k.a. government) from education, we can move beyond the false choice between public ownership (socialism) and public control (fascism) of education.
