So fast this expidition
So vast this heavy load
(With a touch of luck and a sense of need)
Seeing the guns and their faces
We look around the open shore
(Waiting for something..)
..Shall we lose ourselves for a reason
Shall we burn ourselves for the answer
(Have we found the place that we're looking for)
Someone shouted "open the door"
Lookout
-- "Shoot High, Aim Low" - Yes

I'm thinking of the original plot having Marni be the Private Investigator. I was of course brainstorming on my way home with my story inspring music.
This would leave Manhiemer without a role for the moment obvisouly still key to the plot Strickland is still the lead, Marni the opposition, Vanhorne Strickland's "foil" (sidekick or confidant), Manhiemer would then be somewhat of a 'middle man' or out of the role of the opposition he could become the stories love interest of the lead. In most stories the lead and the love interest always end up together. the love interest is then the subplot. But I don't consider this to be the subplot.
There is the subplot of Marni. You get a sense of being a bit sympathetic to Marni she becomes perhaps the "misunderstood" at least thats how she sees herself. OF course what she feels she is doing (thwarting the lead to her goal) is advancing her goal. Puting Manheimer in the middle. Three characters form a triangle (not necessarily a love triangle) just pivot points of conflict..and conflict is the driver of plot. Sometimes its necessary to switch characters to different roles.
Perhaps Marni could be a retired FBI and be a PI. maybe there was some extenuating cicumstance that made her 'retire' early. Maybe something she is ashamed of. This could definately work the way the original plot was.
