Once I was on vacation in California when walking on Venice Beach I saw a homeless man with a sign over a can that said, "I am honest, its for beer." I put a buck in the can, could not resist rewarding his honesty!!!

Dishonesty is the only unforgivable sin.

If you are capable of admitting or confessing to sabotaging your treatment then you have already made improvement and developed insight. Your real problem is behavioral and can eventually be resolved with the right plan of repeating more healthy behaviors.

You may already have the answers sought from your therapist or psychiatrist. A life coach could help you develop a corrective plan and provide the means for accountability. Self motivation and commitment to follow through with a plan are your ticket to salvation.

People who sabotage themselves always look for someone or something to blame for their woes. A doctor can allow themselves to become an enabler if they don't work with you through confrontation and helping clarify and interpret patterns of behavior. There will be different phases in one's treatment. You have apparently done significant work in the area of understanding and identifying your own behaviors. The next level is the action level where you can actually start doing things to reverse the maladative behaviors.

The spoof involved in this entry is representative of patients who intentionally or unintentionally tell lies to avoid doing the right thing. Most who repeatedly engage in such behaviors have no desire or intention of changing. A patient who has no intention of changing their behavior can waste both their time and your time. I don't care how sick a patient is, I will stick with them as long as they can be honest and straight forward. I do not tolerate lying and dishonesty because it is disrespectful and non-productive behavior.

As a patient who has on occasion sabotaged her own treatment by not taking her medication, I'm curious to know if you have any compassion or empathy for patients who self-sabotage, if you're willing to work with them to get them back on track, or if you clump everyone who stops their medication or misses an appointment into one group of miscreants unworthy of psychiatric care.
