We all learn to adapt and adopt more effective coping mechanisms throughout life...
or we die. Nature, from a physical standpoint, has one basic priority which is to propagate our genes into time. A lack of control of ones environment is usually compensated for by an increase in reproduction. This assures that no catastrophic event will terminate the gene pool. Over time man has become less ignorant and better at predicting cause and effect and how to protect self from most natural threats. Disasters such as earth quakes, floods, or meteors from space will always be inevitable. We can never prevent such events and it is limited how much preparation can reasonably occur. For events such as accidents involving transportation vehicles, man will continue to improve safety and decrease risk. Though perfection is nearly impossible, man has always accepted the challenge.
The main catastrophic event for which there is hope of ending 100% is war. Unless declared as an act of self defense, war is always optional. With the threat of nuclear proliferation another option enters the formula. That option is to just skip the freakin' combat and obliterate the enemy. But... if the enemy has a nuclear weapon also, you kill yourself by killing your opponent. The whole idea becomes obsolete because you lose and win at the same time.
That is really why we chose Hussein over Kim Yung Il. In Iraq we have everything to gain and nothing to lose but human life, which to some is expendable, contrary to their words. We stand to gain control of one of the largest oil fields that will remain until the end of this petroleum age we have grown so dependent upon. Attacking North Korea would be a high stakes lose lose endeavor. If we lose in Iraq, Iran is already pissed and will probably be determined to recreate a 21st Century cold war with the U.S. This cold war may not end as the last one with the Soviets did, peacefully. This cold war could truly be Armageddon, likely beginning with attack on Israel. In retrospect, it would clearly be the American political system and its naive voters who ended the world. Please tell me that this is just my imagination gone wild. Unfortunately, I fear I may be one of the sane people.
I have no doubt that many of our world leaders are almost completely insane, so maybe it does stand to reason that our U.S. leaders should be just as nuts. This is definitely not what nature had in mind for mankind. This is more consistent with the will of man made gods. Even the U.S. at times seems convinced that the book of Revelations is inevitable. The religious right proved this during the last election. We must stay the course.
In the context of infinity and eternity, I believe that we do have the balance of control in our own destinies. A wise person once said, "if you don't know where you're going you'll probably never get there." That phrase can be interpreted a number of ways. The most dangerous interpretation is conceiving a leader assuming he is led by a god to meet a certain objective. In character, this leader must be arrogant and a narcissist, even a bit sociopathic. Through the mastery of addiction and denial he has taught himself to believe his own lies, therefore, to himself he believes he is compassionate and conservative. In reality he is neither. He does have assets to fool most of the people most of the time, however, no matter how wrong and ridiculous his policies are. Anyway, this leader who thinks he knows exactly where he is going, leads his followers in the opposite direction of what is best for them. These followers falsely assumed their leader believed in the same god as them. They thought they were doing God's will. They were wrong. They do end up where they planned to go but when they got there they realized it was not where they wanted to be nor what they were told it would be. Now its too late to turn back.
I saw a clip last night about The Suicide Jumpers. Since its construction in 1937, over 1200 people have ended their lives by leaping from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. In 2004 a filmaker placed cameras on the bridge to capture some of this action. If I'm not mistaken, there were close to 60 suicides captured on tape that year. Of course he was criticized for filming such occurrences. Actually he did a service by shining light on the truth and actually talked a few people out of jumping. One of the rare survivors of a jump was interviewed and spoke of how he realized he didn't want to die the second his feet left the side of the bridge. Too late to turn back. He landed in the water feet first at 75 mph, a force that instantly broke both legs. He could only hold his breath and use his hands to return from the 50 foot depth to the surface. He followed a little light and was miraculously assisted by a sea lion who kept him alive until the rescuers arrived. This sea lion was his guardian angel which I'm sure he now believes in. I guess the moral here is that sometimes we survive stupid choices. If we don't there's nothing to worry about. If we do we can become true disciples of truth and value.
