Feeling Ecstatic
Hearing "Fuel" - Metallica (S&M Album)
Unbelieveable!
Oh... my... God....
This was the second year of the East Kingdom's annual Kingdom A&S Championships. Last year, we traveled to the northern reaches of New York, where I competed in both the Queen's Championship, and the King's Championship for A&S - while also running back and forth to be part of K&Q Archery at the same event, in the pouring rain at War of the Roses (AS 38). That was my first time competing, with full documentation on only one piece, and partial docs on a few others. Despite not placing for overall, I was able to walk home with first place in Calligraphy, Carving, and Illumination. The Carving was my main goal, as the piece was one that had been comissioned by an Atlantian, through myself here in the East, carving and burning out of a pine board a 9th c. Viking AoA received in the West 3 years before (part of a 3 kingdom tour). In return payment, as per contract, the East Kingdom received a new Combat Archer - me - by purchasing a shiny new English kettlehelm, custom made by Ironmonger designs. :)
This year found me taking the competition a little more seriously, as did I take my work slightly more seriously. Everything was documented with at least 3 pages of documentation, research, and bibliography (except Ryan's map of the East / AoA, finished this Feb - no time for the last item to be documented, but there are period references for the border and parts of the map). Special bookstands were purchased for the 2 live scrolls I had available - a 3rd was supposed to make it, but unfortunately could not - and the 4th was listed also as a photocopy/scan for the sake of protecting the rest of the book it was in.
There were no winners for individual categories this year - everything was lumped in to either King's or Queen's Champion, either by Pentathlon or King's Choice. Thusly, the scrolls and scans I entered were not graded as I had hoped.
However....
....I am now the newest King's Champion of Arts and Sciences. And the first scribe to achieve this. And... best of all.... done without a Maunche to my name.
All of this was done to honor the recipients of each item: His Majesty Kelson himself., my lord boyfriend Ryan McWhyte (birthday boy that day - we'll catch him another time to embarass him *grin*), Their Majesties of Calontir, Her Grace Luna, Lord Artemis le Beau.... and each of the recipients of my scrolls over the past 5 years, and the students I have taught in the last 4 years here in my home Barony.
As I have said on numerous lists: I am proud to be part of this community of artisans here in the East. The competition was indeed fierce this year, with enchanting song by Mistress Dorrigen of Grey Gate, an Elizabethan gown bejeweled and beaded to the nines, Safia's pottery and scribal work, and so many others with names I cannot place in my head at this late hour. I am grateful for His Majesty's appreciation of my work, and for the forgiveness we both share in a minor event now in our past - looking ahead, I will do my best to honor both King and Kingdom, and continue to earn my keep as a scribe and artisan of the East.
Adding one last comment here.... I also had the opportunity to work on a scroll in the final hours before court. This piece was an Award of Arms (illuminated by Lady Clodagh, formerly known as Tzitzakion, Mistress Michel's apprentice) for an Olaf (something in Icelandic, can't remember those long names). In two hours, in a hot, stuffy, humid, sweaty room, I gave it my best shot, penning in words that had my head swimming before I finally lifted my head from the page. Master Ernst's protege was especially helpful, and her company was very much appreciated, as it kept me from losing my wits in that heat. No wonder I was still dazed when court was relocated from the field to the hall, to avoid the approaching thunderstorm....
So now here I am, late at night, drifting off into dreamland....
Still overwhelmed at becoming the newest King's Champ of A&S. (Thank you, everyone!) :)
