Feeling Hopeful

Update on Bill and Kevin.june11th2004

I wish I had good news to report. My dad's health has gotten worse. He stills lives by himself, but I dont see him living at home too much longer. He was in a car accident in Dec,not bad but wrecked his truck.I cant see him driving too much longer either. He can hardly walk any distances now. He had a pacemaker put in Nov2003. It doesnt seem to be doing too much. There is no way he could make the trip back to Fenway this year.

Overall he is still in our lives and kickin as he says. He has smiled alot this year though since the Red Sox have killed the Yankees what is it 9 of 10 games.YIKES. We will have to wait and see what happens at the end of the year. If the Sox and Yanks go at it again I will root for Boston again. It's not hard to say that when you think of the reason behind it. I hope he will still be here.

Those few days of fame me and dad had last Oct were the highlght of our lives. I never will be able to thank AOL  enough for what they did for me and my dad. It was a magical few days that I will always remember to the day I die and beyond. And knowing that the little paragraph I wrote warmed the hearts of thousands of people in this country that I love so much. I'll tell ya looking up at my dad at Fenway, eating a snickers bar and drinking a beer was something I will never forget. He looked like a ten year old kid enjoying the game of his life. That moment is frozen in time in my heart. It was a great day.

All the great feelings this story created around the country America that is mine and dads gift to you.Your gift to us was an outpouring of love I can't explain in a million words. I got thousands of emails from well wishers and people who could relate to this story, many today still keep in touch with me to see how dad is doing. Thank you all.

My dad worked hard all his life.He didnt have that much time to throw a baseball or a football around. He was busy working trying to help raise six kids. Sometimes it was tough going, but we all came through it ok. I know I' ll never be half the man my father is,and im a little ashamed at that  because he would have been a great role model for any son any where growing up. All I can do is be a better person tommorow than I was today. I will surley try.

I ask all of you to pray for our men and women overseas who put their lives on the line every day so we can enjoy our freedom in this country that we all love so much. Thanks again AOL ,and thank you to all the new friends I have made in the last 7 months.GOD BLESS YOU ALL.  KEVIN RABBETT.   OUT.

looking back

I want people to remember why i wrote this little paragraph about my dad.Its a story about a sons love for his dad pure and simple.Though the red sox lost the ALCS,i know they will be back at it next year.I hope my dad will still be here to watch.I would like to do this all over again next year with a different outcome. Now its time to say here we go yankees here we go.I cant help it.There are so many more important things in life than baseball. My daughter sarah is going through med school, she going to be a doctor. Is that great or what.My daughter Katie gets out of high school this year. She wants to be a psycoligist.I couldnt be happier, and i thank god everyday.I want people to know that i was not given any money for this story from AOL.I think that would have tainted it.I want to thank the people at AOL TIME WARNER.for taking this story to the american people and beyond. It sure made us all feel good for a change in a crazy world.Aol gave my dad and i something money cant bye,a great memory. Thanks jamie and steve, and AOL god bless.  KEVIN AND BILL

Game time

Now came our time, game time.  We were like a couple of kids at the game, so were Jamie and Steve. Then the fight happened.  My Dad was just shaking his head.  I thought he was really concerned but he bent over to me and said I thope they get the game going again soon cause I 'm trying real hard to wait till the end of the game before I go to the bathroom. The game went on.  TheYanks scored a few runs off Pedro.  Then that bazarre stunt in the bullpen happened. Just being in the beautiful ball park with my Dad was great.  It's too bad Boston lost the game, but we had a great time anyway.  It was a long day for my father, but he came through it with flying colors.  At one point during the game Dad leaned over to me and said I can smell the hot dogs and popcorn.  I thought that was neat.  Thanks to AOL for making the hightlight of my Dad's and my life.

Getting to the Game

Saturday morning was a beautiful day for a game. My wife, Donna,  and daughter,  Sarah,  came over to my dads house to meet and thank Jamie and Steve for all they have done. Then it was a few quick photos and off we went to the Mass pike.On the way up Steve and Jamie were taken back by the scenery. The trees were just starting to change. Steve was surprised how much of Massachusetts was undeveloped. We talked baseball, football, hockey, and before ya knew it we were there. Fenway Park. After a couple of u turns, legal one ones I might add,  it was time to park. We got our tickets and began to walk around Fenway. My Dad was like a beagle out for a walk. He stopped every 10 ft looking around,up down, all around. He even stopped to watch two guys unloading newspapers from a truck. It sure was funny to watch. Then more pictures in front of the fenway park sign. Then came my big moment. I had to go into the Red Sox store and get my Boston hat. YIKES. It was not as bad as I thought it would be. Jamie bought a few hats for himself and friends. My Dad was looking around at all the Red Sox shirts with the players name on them. Then he said, oh theres Ramsy, I said Ramsy,no no no,thats ramirez, hes Spanish. All I got was an OHH. Then it was off to a bar for a rest for Dad and a couple of beers. A couple of guys playing a video golf game asked us if we were the ones in the aol article. I said yes, they shook our hands, and we talked for awhile. Soon it was TV time, but we got shut down on yawkey way and had to walk all the way around. It was a long walk for Dad but he made it no problem. My dad had to have his sausage sandwich before we were interviewed. We talked to five tv stations. My dad said I have to keep saying the same thing over and over.I told him such is the life of a star.He laughed.

Friday morning at my house

Jamie and Steve pull up to my house in a cab. I can see they brought all the necessary equipment with them, cameras, lap tops all kinds of stuff. I like that word stuff. We shake hands and begin,Jamie interviews my dad and I while Steve takes pictures of a picture of my grandfather in his old baseball uniform. Then came time for a walk over to the park, the same park I played baseball with my friends growing up. It felt strange to be there again after so long. It was great being there with my Dad. He never had alot of time to play with us kids,he was busy working trying to keep food on the table for six kids. Steve took some great pictures of me and Dad at the ball park in front of my Dad's house. Then it was back to Dad's house for more talk and photos. I think these guys from aol really got a kick out of my dad and me. I like to make people laugh. I think I did a good job that day. It was a great history lesson for us all. By the end of the day we knew each other very well. Then it was time for them to head off to their hotel for the night. When they had left I felt glad that I was not a movie star I don't think I could take all the attention those people get. It really was fun though and I know my Dad got a kick out of it. That made it all worth it.

The call from washington

Thursday morning I get a call from AOL in Washington.Thought I was getting drafted again. Just kidding. I  was Jamie from AOL saying I was getting alot of hits on my post in the Red Sox message board. I said oh really how many? Jamie said over 600 right now,and growing. I was floored. Then he said their thinking about sending my Dad and myself to a ALCS game. I said WHAT are you kidding? He wasn't. Then he asked me if it was ok to come up tommorow from Washington to see us and talk.I said see ya tommorow.

Why I wrote the paragraph

The reason I wrote the story of my Dad was to see if people could relate to it. I had no idea the turnout would be so crazy. I felt blessed that the Yanks won so many world series in my life time, and my dad had never seen the Red Sox win one. So I felt that I had to write that little story for all Red Sox fans sake.
