Feeling Surprised
SLICK wILLIE
I went to see him last night. I debated
about going. My feelings were mixed,
excitement with curiosity to see if he had
changed. I know I have in the last eight
years. I had a lump in my throat as I
recall all that had transpired in those years.
I had arranged to be there at five o'clock
allowing an extra half hour for him to show.
But I ended up waiting two hours for him
and I almost gave up, but hung on, knowing
this might be my last opportunity ever, to
see if I still had the same feelings for him.
For seven years, I had put my trust in him
then been disillusioned by his wandering ways.
No amount of apologizing could restore
that perfect enchantment, and we parted.
I had heard that he suffered great remorse
and even may have had a broken heart,
but heard also that he was trying to regain
his stamina under the doctors orders. I
wished him well, but since we never had
corresponded for these eight long years,
I wanted to see him once again,
if only for old times sake.
When he finally came, with some story
about a plane delay, I was thrilled to
see a trimmer, dapper physique and
he looked well, He was tanned and
dressed fashionably in dark suit and
the customary red tie. His manner was
even more svelte and self-assured than
I remembered. His hair was stunning,
white that contrasted his youthfulness.
I listened quietly while he talked ,
mesmerized once again by his charm
and intelligence. The old charisma.
He was always so eloquent.
I thought he would talk more about
himself than he did, but he seemed
totally absorbed by his family endeavors,
especially his wife. He went on and on,
about her job, her devotion, her caring
ways. And her plans for the future. I
could sense his pride and gratitude for
her steadfast support through the years.
He seemed like a man in love with his wife,
all over again. Sad for me, glad for him.
It was good to see him again.
I was glad that I came, even if
I had stood in the rain and waited
expectantly, only to hear his
glowing tributes to his wife,
the real love of his life.
So with a tear and a sigh,
I waved him good-bye. I wished
him well and by the way, if we
never meet again, will he please
say hello to Hillary for me?
