It was so great at Alpha's 4th of July celebration last year Click here: Just Chillin' that I attended again this year. Some friends of mine decided to try it, too. (Many towns around here have some good old-fashioned events.) I had to study the day's program; there were so many things ... didn't want to be out the WHOLE day!

I parked near the new Alpha museum.
It's in the old bank building.
They are just getting started on their remodeling & turning it into a museum.
This guy is so dedicated to the beginning of the new museum.
The rocks here are ore samples from the different mines that used to operate in the area.
They have many photos; a CD was on sale that featured many scenes from ALPHA history.
A beautiful wood floor was just laid, & also some lovely new woodwork.

A PRESS FOR MAKING FINNISH CHEESE

Local musicians playing for museum contributions. They are so good!
FIREMEN SERVED UP FREE ICE CREAM & CRACKER JACKS.
LOTZA DOGS CAME, TOO.

SEE THIS CAMPER/TRAILER?

IT'S ACTUALLY A YOOPER BEER DISPENSER.

BRATS, OR DOGS, OR CORN ON THE GRILL ...
We used to tell a friend of ours who has a birthday on the Fourth:
A SPECIAL DAY FOR VETERANS TO PARTICIPATE, TOO.

The old Porter School now has a whole new purpose ... a woodworking shop that takes up the whole building.

HERE'S SOME LINKS WITH INFORMATION ON ALPHA & OUR AREA:
FOR A REALLY GOOD ENTRY ABOUT THE U.P. ... GO BACKIN MY ARCHIVES:
Click here: Ya ... I'm up in da U.P.!
That entry from last year has so many good links forpeople doing some traveling in the U.P. ... esp. up to the Keweenau Peninsula, about a hour & a half north of here.
Maggie & I went up there last August, a friend & I did the trip in the fall, and, Mom & I had driven up there the previous fall. If I didn't love it here so much, I'd look for a place up there!
I, instead, visit this BLOG frequently:
HERE'S MAGGIE & LAKE SUPERIOR

We got a really good map, & took a variety of roads to the START of U.S 41 (which: the other end is down at Southern Florida).

I want my Mommy ... in June, some of us were to have driven down to Texas to attend my niece's wedding ... AND BRING MOM BACK WITH US. Well, that plan developed a glitch & did not come to pass.
Mom was born & raised in the U.P., around Ishpeming, Clarksville, Republic. We made a lovely little home for her down in Texas near my sister, Jean ... but ... with the idea that she could be a "snowbird" & spend some time up here in the Northwoods, too.
My Mom's Grandfather had landed from the Old Country in Copper Harbor, MI ... and lived & worked for a time in Eagle River, MI.
So far, I'm the only one of "us kids" who made it back up here to God's country to live ... most of the others are in east central Wisconsin, where Mom also lived for a time before moving to New Mexico for many years.

I'm formulating my plans step by step ... keep changing the plans for my new walkway.
Some ideas have been scrapped along the way ... such as to fill in the gaps between the pavers with little bittie log slabs. I thought that that looked too busy. Watching too much HGTV ... but, it gives me ideas.
I will fill in the spaces between the pavers with some sort of little decorative stones, like landscaping rocks. White? Dark brown? I think that I will make a line of the little pavers as a border line at the edges ... perhaps raised a few inches high????
SOME FRIENDS GAVE ME THIS BLAZER ... TO BE USED ONLY AS A FARM MACHINE ... it takes the place of my poor little dune buggy that is needing some transmission work.
The VW specialist in the family is my oldest son, but, he's way down near Green Bay.
My old pickup truck is fine for hauling branches, junk, etc ... but is to old & feeble to make the hill above the house. The Blazer is FOUR-WHEEL-DRIVE, and longer legged than the dune buggy.
FLOWERS ... God has lavishly planted so many different kinds of flowers in my yard
... makes up for my not getting around to fancy flower beds.

I cannot believe that's it's been so long since I have had any action on getting parts & repair for my John Deere tractor. SOON ... I'll be able to add something to my John Deere Journal, click here>>>Metal Master
MY POOR TRACTOR:

JUST HAD TOSHARE THIS DIRTY PICTURE
FROM MY SISTER JEAN ... IT IS A GREAT
Yooper-type PICTURE!

I remember that camp song ... "Sing Your Way Home at the Close of the Day" ... this scene is heading home from the crest of the hill behind my home at sunset.

Would you believe that there are many people who have emotions about the U.P. EXACTLY AS YOU?
You wouldn't believe people who anguish for DECADES wanting to move "back home" ... that's what it feels like.
That is part of the reason that I do this Journal ... for those for whom this is the only way they can make a "virtual visit" with my pictures.
When I am telling someone that I have moved back "home" after almost 50 years ... I cannot help the lump in my throat & the tears that fill my eyes. THERE ARE SO MANY MORE PEOPLE JUST LIKE ME WHO LOVE THE U.P. ... SOME REALLY DID MAKE IT HOME. -
Do you think it's possible to be homesick for a place that isn't officially your home?(At least not yet) A place that you only visit once a year? The absolute beauty of the UP keeps me in a constant state of awe. ::sigh::
