I went to another special event last weekend, with some good friends.
The very special Iron County Museum had an event celebrating a Scandinavian custom ... "Midsummers Day" ... the longest day of the year.
There were quite a few singers with a variety of Scandinavian music.  I think my favorite song was the silly song:  "OH, LUTEFISK".
It is said that about half the Norwegians who immigrated to America came in order to escape the hated lutefisk, and the other half came to spread the gospel of lutefisk's wonderfulness.
- Norwegian-American saying

Here's some of my previous entries about Lutefisk:

Since we were there ... we made a quick trip around the museum and outdoors exhibits  before the buildings were closed up for the day.

MANY LOG BUILDINGS ... these were dismantled, each log coded, & re-assembled at the museum site ... resembling old communitees.

This is SUMMER! ... REALLY ... June is almost over ... the 4th of July is near.   Many little towns make a big thing out of the 4th.  Republic used to.  Alpha probably has one of the best now.
There are so many activities that I'd like to go to.  Well, with the price of gas, and my budget, I usually talk myself out of most of them.  If the price of admission is $10 or more ... I probably won't go ... if the distance is more than 20 miles, I probably won't go.
  •      There's something interesting up at Covington next weekend ... A Finnish Music  Festival, but the admission is $10.
  •      At the Crystal Theatre, there is a free concert by an Army Band.
  •      At Champion is a weekend of activities; Sunday is the Horse-Pulling Contest.
  •      Many museums, etc. are only open during the summer months.  I really hope to get to both the Amasa and the Crystal Falls museums this summer, again.

MY LAWN MOWING ... I GUESS I'LL JUST DO SOME TRIMMING AROUND THE EDGES SO THAT THE WILDFLOWERS CAN DO THEIR BLOOMING.
I've been pegging away at my annual war-on-the burdocks. The weed whacking & my other chores have to get done on the installment plan ... my back says so!  I do several minutes of weed-whacking .... lean on the weed-whacker ... several minutes of weed-whacking .... lean on the weed-whacker ... several minutes of weed-whacking .... lean on the weed-whacker ...   GO SIT DOWN ... & REPEAT.  I set a goal to get done, then quit & go sit down ... with both the internal & the external liniment.

THE KITTENS ... yesterday, I didn't see them.  The mother cat has been taking them up in the woods.  This family of cats (we've had them for generations) teaches their kittens to hide from people.  It seems as tho they know that after the kittens get to a certain age, we take the kittens & send them away to new homes.  I was just getting to be able to pet the kittens & pick up some of them when I fed them.  I will be P^^**^^ if I don't see them today.
Darn!  There are coyotes, hawks, eagles, fox, bobcats, & Lord only knows what else here!

I'd better get in gear ... the hurrieder I go, the behinder I get.  I don't know where that came from ... or was that just something that my Dad always said?  The Cryptograms that I'm so fond of ... many of them are interesting quotes.  I just love this one:
I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

Maybe, you would like to do something different?
How about an informal writing contest?  Read all about it:
HERE'S A SILLY WRITER'S CONTEST ... it is by a retired Pastor who
recently moved from Crystal Falls to Neenah, WI.

Entries must be submitted by July 20, 2008..

 See ... I REALLY am a BLOGGER!

Recently ... I added another comment on WLUC T.V.'s news page on mining in the U.P. on this topic:

GET REAL!

OKAY ... SO YOU PERCEIVE PROBLEMS ALONG WITH THE BENEFITS OF MINING IN THE U.P.
NOW ... grow up & quit whining. We have a wealth of minerals here; many of us had parents, grandparents, etc. who worked in the mines & remember when the U.P. was not a ghost town, as it is becoming.
THE SMART THING TO DO WOULD BE TO PUT OUR TIME, EFFORT, MONEY, TALENTS, & WHINING INTO SOME PLANNING.
Each area of local government should make proposals to make sure that we get the maximum benefit from 21st Century Mining.
How about making sure that as much as possible local labor is used, local suppliers and use local businesses?
The mining companies can be more profitable if the ores do not have to be shipped out of the area to be processed.
Yes, strict laws can be made to make sure that the mining projects eventually leave the scenery in acceptable condition when each mine is done.
ALL YOU SQUEAKERS & SQUAWKERS ... PUT YOUR EFFORTS INTO MAXIMIZING THE BENEFITS OF MINING TO THE U.P.!

— Lois Haglund, Crystal Falls

I plan upon sending that to some U.P. newspapers
when I get a round-tuit.

The elections ... still the main news topic. Thank Heavens we don't have to go thru this every year.
WELL ... ON SECOND THOUGHT ... ONCE THE ELECTIONS ARE OVER ... NOTHING EVER GETS DONE BECAUSE OF ALL THE POLITICAL BICKERING THAT GOES ON!  I JUST HATE THAT!
My favorite candidate didn't make the cut ... but, maybe now that we know him, he'll run again next time!

Somewhere in the basement I have a couple of round-tuits if I can find them  I'll send you one. I think they are with the wooden nickles.
Good to see the Church still has great flowers.

Your pictures are really pretty. You really tell them about that mining. Wish I didn't feel so bad I would check out some of those websites you have listed. I understand about that back hurting. You do good to get done what you do. Have a nice afternoon. Hugs, Helen
