While I ate my dinner tonight, I watched "Jurassic Park" on AMC. Yeah, I've seen it many times before, but it's a good one, isn't it?

While everyone knows Michael Crichton for his Jurassic Park books and movies, and for "ER," I was a fan way back when. One of my favorite books ever is The Andromeda Strain, and the movie (filmed in the '70's) holds up surprisingly well. It's a story of a mysterious organism--bacteria? virus? fungus? The team must figure it out--brought to earth via a satellite. It's a killer, and a team of researchers ventures deep into a government biological containment facility in the desert to try and find a cure to what could very well be the end of mankind. This is some good stuff, with sound theory and authentic laboratory practices, and this movie is what made me want to be a microbiologist. The researchers' attempts to figure out the makeup of the organism and how it spreads is suspenseful and hair-raising.

Another favorite is The Terminal Man, in which doctors attempt to control seizures in a patient by implanting a stimulant in his brain. Let's just say that there are...side effects.

Crichton is one of my favorite authors because his research and detail is excellent, and he makes even complex scientific theories understandable. If you like medical or science thrillers, Michael Crichton is the tops, in my opinion.

Hmm. I've got "The Andromeda Strain" around here somewhere. I just might have to watch that tonight!

His writings are right up your alley since you worked in a lab. I have not read any of his books. My favorites are Koontz and Stephen King.
