Feeling Quiet
make a list
Last Sunday at church we started a 4-week series based on the book One Month to Live by Kerry and Chris Shook.
The pastor preaching this series is Doug Fields; he's going to teach 3 of the weeks and then the authors of the book will be there the 4th week. Doug is so funny, he could be a stand-up comedian, but his teaching is Biblical and that is what matters more than the laughs his preaching brings.
He gave us an assignment that I thought I would share with you. I did this assignment and will be posting what I came up with in my next entry. This assignment could be from the book, I'm reading it, but you read a chapter a day and I just started it Monday.
Assignment:
If you had one month to live how would you want to spend your time?
Write down everything you would want to do. For example, he wrote he would eat a 1/2 gallon of ice cream every day, quit his job, spend more time with family and about 50 other things.
Then cross off the list those that are unrealistic to do every day or if you didn't die at the end of those 30 days. He crossed off his list eating the ice cream because if he did that every day he "would explode" as he said. He also said he wouldn't be able to quit his job, but he definitely could spend more time with family.
Then of what is left, see how you can make those doable. Exactly how could you spend more time with family was the example he used. This is what he came up with for himself:
1. Don't talk on cell phone if any family member is with me in car but talk with them.
2. Don't go on computer until kids go to sleep (he has 3 teens).
3. Put wife's time to talk in front of his own need to relax.
4. Do the "dad do you want to's" for example "dad do you want to play catch".
He also said to depend on God's power to live out the values you write down on that list. As a believer, we have access to that power from the Lord. Ephesians 1:19-20 says "I pray that you will begin to understand the incredible greatness of his power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God's right hand in the heavenly realms."
He said to move for willpower to real power (the Lord's power).
With the Lord I can do anything because he gives me the strength; without the Lord I try to do it on my own (willpower) and usually end up failing. Thank you Lord!!

I love Kerry Shook (no relation). When I don't make it to church, I always watch him on TV Church. Great excercise for all of us to do. I need to make a list. Linda in Washington state http://journals.aol.com/lsfp1

My daughter and I were talking about something like this ourselves. I told her I'd want more time with my boys and grandchildren - she also wanted that. However, they are east coast and we are west coast - and we all have obligations where we are located. I guess the only doable part on that would be more time on the phone with them. ::sigh:: There were other things we came up with and those we could make doable.
Had to lol at the ice cream - that would be something my daughter would want to do, until she started thinking a little more realistic! :-)

Hi! I Like this scripture! WE all need to be reminded of his power!
I am already doing everything I would put on the list. And i have nothing to cross off. Anything I dont have I dont need. Anything I need I ask and God provides!
satan trys to steal my joy by using strife between my children. But I walk in love and cover them in prayer. Whatever their problem is God is dealing with them about something that has nothing to do with me. So I pray That he watches over them and that they seek his wisdom and guidance.|
I am benefitting with the peace that passes all understanding, with my diet. I am meditating on the word and that fills me. I get hungry but I dont have to stress eat because I will not accept stress anymore! If I eat healthy foods I wont worry about loosing pounds right now. I feel better already. I dont weigh myself . That never worked for me, it just made me anxious. Thank you my friend for your inspiring entry! june
