Feeling Happy

taxes

I guess we should think about getting our taxes done. That's the problem, we keep thinking about getting them done but haven't yet; this weekend is it though.

so tell me, have you done your taxes yet and was it good news or bad news? Did you get a refund or did you have to pay?

I have no idea what to expect this year; its the first year I haven't worked for myself so we didn't have to pay quarterlies and extra tax on top of that; first year we didn't own a house so we can't take those things off our taxes. It will be interesting.

We got audited from our tax return in 2005. H&R Block does our taxes, every year since my husband started working, so at least 30 years, maybe longer. They do good work.

We got audited because it was the first year in 7 years that we got a refund; usually we had to pay and pay big because as a self-employed person, I was in responsible for all my taxes and if I didn't gauge right on what to pay for quarterlies, we always had to pay that difference at the end of the year.

In 2004 when we only owed a little over a thousand as compared to thousands in years past (mind you this is on top of thousands paid in quarterlies) I knew if we just upped the quarterly amount a little bit and gave a few extra dollar to donations throughout the year, maybe we wouldn't owe in 2005.

We didn't owe in 2005.  In fact we got a refund.  A nice one too. I don't think the government liked that, because last September we got a letter from the IRS saying they wanted to see our receipts for our charity donations.  I had the receipts which I copied and sent but I sweated it out because they also said they might want to see cancelled checks. I shredded all our cancelled checks before we moved. Obviously, I forgot we might need them somewhere down the line.

I prayed about it and then I just basically left it in the Lord's hands. Was nothing I could do about it anyway, if they wanted the checks and I didn't have them, we would deal with it.

Got a letter from them in November that they received our items and would let us know by December 17th.  December 17th came and went, January came and went, February came and went.  About two weeks ago, we got a letter from the IRS.

I opened it with a touch of concern to see what it would say.  Thankfully, they deemed all our donations as reasonable ones, which I knew they would be. And we didn't owe any further taxes. Thank you Lord!

So tomorrow we go and see what will be for this. Whatever it is, its okay. One time when I was worried about it, that morning before getting our taxes done I read in the Bible when Jesus said "give to Cesaer what is Cesaer's and to God what is God's". So I will.

Because no matter what we think about our country and our president, it is still a great country. We have freedom of speech and we can worship whoever we choose to worship freely and we have so many blessings that we take for granted that others would "die" for.

I thank the troops that so gladly give their lives for our safety and the safety of other countries.

Thank you Lord for putting me right where you want me. Love you Lord!

This was the first year I didn't work as well so we weren't sure how the taxes would come out but we overpaid!!  Unfortunately (or forunately depending on how you look at it) we just used the overpayment as part of the first quarters payment (Hubby is considered self-employed).
    Have a good one! :)

We did our Federal in mid-February and got a nice return, but I'm down to the last minute with state taxes.  I should have had H&R Block do them all, lol, then it would have been done and overwith.  We only owe state about a hundred bucks, though, so expect we can pay it without too much hassle.

I did want to point out that if they do decide they need the cancelled checks... doesn't your bank keep copies of them?  I'd check with them if necessary.  Ours will give us copies of them for a fee ($1 a page, I think) if we lose our cancelled checks.  Usually, the charities we give to send us receipts, but not all do, so it's nice to know there is a backup!  :-)

    Blessings,

My BF is an accountant and does mine.  I can usually do the long form but my interest on my mortgage is getting lower.  I used to get pretty decent returns.  I'm expecting $604 this year.  In Pa. we pay a 1% wage tax to our boroughs so I always hope to get enough to pay that.  I just mailed mine in on Monday.  Good luck!  Chris

I take ours to H & R Block. They called me in one time for a pair of boots that cost $65 (work boots.. oil on soles.. so not house shoes.. just work shoes). The lady asked me if they had steel toes. I told the truth... no just boots. Can not claim them unless they are steel toed boots. :-)  The $65 mistake cost me $295 !!!  She was the most hateful lady! Fresh out of school. Got someone good to do the taxes the next year.. he told me that some of the things she told me was not true. He said when you get someone out of school they are really bad to work with. hmmm The world... right? lol

We did ours last Friday. Was getting back some money but gave it all to federal for next year. I did not have taxes held out. I can use the money. lol In a couple of weeks I am going to go through papers and put the older receipts in a foot locker. Can you believe I still have the sale bill for our manufactured home. lol Too funny! You have no idea how many times that has gone through my mind... dealing with the taxes on our manufactured home. I have searched the Internet for information and they are not doing the correct thing.. but what can I do about it. The state board wants money too. Leaving it in the hands of the Lord. If He wants me to pay it.. then so be. :-) God bless and good entry. Janie
