Feeling Quiet

M.O.M. Monday

My mom married my dad on May 2, 1953, a day short of her 32nd birthday.  He was the same age as her, his birthday being in March. My mom felt she was an "old" bride, but put on the traditional type of wedding.

By August of 1954, they would have the first of their 3 children, my sister was born on August 1st of that year; the smallest of my mom's babies weighing in at 6 pounds 13 ounces.  I believe she came pretty close to her due date, I can't remember for sure if she was a couple days early or a couple of days late.

Two years later, on August 18, 1956, my brother would join the family.  He was definitely late, 2 weeks late to be exact, and was a big baby.  He was born by cesarean section and my mom never wanted him to know that he was born that way because she thought he would feel bad about it and the pain he caused her. It wasn't until after her death, in talking to my brother, did I share this story with him about him being a cesarean section.  He weighed 9 pounds 14 ounces and was 22 inches long. Visitors to the nursery were amazed at how big he was and commented he looked like a 2-month old baby. My mom was a big embarrassed about that.  He almost didn't make it, nor my mom either, because he was so big and my mom was having trouble delivering him. Thankfully, there was a tornado warning in the town next to us and a doctor who was there visiting, couldn't get home and he saw the struggle my mom was having and suggested the C-section.  It saved my mom's and brother's life.

When my brother was about 9 months old, my mom suspected she might be pregnant again but she was hoping she was just going through the "change" as she wasn't ready for another baby. Their intent was to have 4 children, she just wanted them to be spaced a little further apart.  The Lord had other plans, though, and I was born a few days before Christmas in 1957.  When people would ask my mom what she wanted for Christmas that year, she would say "Tiny Tears" which happened to be a popular doll at the time that cried "real tears". Of course, she meant me, and of course I have cried plenty of tears over the years. It was customary at the time for moms to stay in the hospital at least 10 days after they had a baby, something my mom did with my sister, and she was in there longer because of my brother's birth. Determined to have Christmas at home with her husband and other two children, she convinced the doctor to allow her to be discharged on Christmas Eve with a 3-day old baby.

I can't remember exactly what was needed by me on Christmas Day, it was something to do with feeding me, I think it was evaporated milk, but whatever was needed, it was not in the household. My father called a friend of their's that had a corner store and the man met him there to open up the store to purchase what was needed for my feedings.

Approximately 18 months later, on July 1, 1959, my dad would die from lung problems he probably got from WW2 as he lived in Poland at the time and was a soldier during the war and ended up in a German work camp for prisioners of war.

The Lord brought them together to have the 3 children they had; amazing how he worked to get them to meet, marry, have the 3 children so quickly and then for my dad to have died at such a young age.  But that was also the Lord's purpose too so that my mom years later would make the decision to leave Pennsylvania and move to California where 2 of her children would meet their spouses and have the children the Lord intended them to have.  Thank you Lord!!

I loved your entry about your mom and dad and how you and your siblings entered the world.  What a beautiful wedding picture.  What a wonderful story.  Thank you for sharing!!!  She has such a beautiful gown.  So nice your dad found a way to get you the needed baby milk.  Oh my goodness, I can relate to the csection story a bit.... Aaron almost killed me too.  He was a big boy like his dad.  LOL he got stuck.  All I could say was Jesus the whole time.
