Feeling Quiet

memory

I'm at the stage of our move where I'm disconnecting utilities on one end and getting ready to connect them at our new place.  I was happy that I could actually disconnect some of our services via the Internet and could do it in the evening instead of making phone calls during business hours where I have less time to do so due to my work schedule.

Yesterday I was disconnecting trash service here and when I called the office, all was fine until they asked me to verify the phone number I used to open the account. My mind went blank, actually it was blank before then, but for the life of me I could not remember my old cell phone number from Montana.  I remembered that was the number I used because I remembered that was the only number that would be a working number between our two residences before we got a land line at our new place.

I thought and thought; I could come up with Amy's cell phone number and my son's cell phone number but I finally told the person there was no way I was going to remember it and what was plan B? Unfortunately, there was no plan B and they were pretty adamant its remember that phone number or pay for trash at this address for the rest of my life.  They did say to have my husband call since the account was in his name and they would see what they could do, which made me laugh because if I couldn't remember a number, he wouldn't be able to either because even now with his new cell phone, he's constantly asking me what the number is.

For just a brief moment when I got off the phone, I felt a bit overwhelmed with this whole move and cried a few tears and then I asked the Lord to help me remember the number or to find the number. And a few minutes later, thank you Lord, I thought "I'll call Verizon and see if they have the numbers still on file".

It took me 10 minutes and 3 phone calls to get a real live Verizon rep and not an automated recording and I finally got someone in the sales department which I knew wouldn't be able to help, but they thankfully referred me to customer service.

Thankfully, I had a very nice customer service rep who took the time to look up our records and despite not finding it right away, eventually did.  She couldn't find all of our numbers at first, but asked me what day we had transferred service to new California numbers.  Surprisingly I could remember that day even though I couldn't remember my cell phone number. (It was July 4, 2006).

So she looked it up and lo and behold I got all our numbers (which I wrote down just in case) and I thanked her very much; thank you Brenda from Verizon and thank you Lord, and then called back the trash company and disconnected service.  I wanted to tell the people there that they might want to think of a different way to verify the account than a phone number since I'm sure I'm not the first one this has happened to or perhaps I am but I doubt it.

You know, I used to be able to be very good with numbers. I could remember a phone number the first time I heard it; back in the good old days. But age and stress has taken a toll on this brain of mine and I'm lucky if I can eventually remember numbers that I once knew like I knew the back of my hand. I've learned to write down things a lot more these days and not to rely on "I'll remember it" because chances are these days I won't remember it.

You're not alone, Betty. I find that it's even worse now that we can program numbers into our phones. My parents are #1 on speed dial, but I can't begin to tell you their actual phone number!

Best of luck with your move--I'm sure it's hectic now, but you'll be unpacking before you know it!

    Take care,
    Beth

Utility companies are evil, lol.  And no, sweetie, you aren't the only one who forgets numbers or how you opened an account.  Doesn't make you old, unless I am too, and I can't be because I"m 29, right?  De ;)

I am glad it worked out, I would never have remembered a number from that long ago either. I don't even remember our last number before our cell phones. lol
I hope the move goes smoothly.

Boy can I ever relate! Funny though I can remember m very first address and phone number from when I was a little kid. Ask me anything else in between then and now, there's no way I could remember. Sometimes I forget my current info!! Glad you were able to get what you needed. Martha :-)

Some days I'm fortunate to remember anything!!  I think I'd have been tempted to tell the trash folks that I wished them luck trying to bill me at the new address I was not going to give them.  LOL  Bad me.

And I have been so behind in alerts in J-land till I didn't even realize you were moving!  Or did I just forget?!?!  ;o)   -  Barbara
