The Best in the World (Never mind that She's a Mutt!)
"When you play, you gotta pay! Come'on now, Tina....time to pay up!"
The warm, tepid water had filled up in the tub. Shampoo and conditioner, nearby.
I walked into the living room where my unrecognizable dog sat, cringing on the couch.
Tina knew what was in store. There was no avoiding it now.
"Ok, Tina, let's go!"
I picked up all 30lbs, of my then mud-laden dog, carried her through the hall and plopped her into the tub.
The water immediately turned black.
Tina stood with a look of torture on her face, as I lathered her up, trying to scrub especially the lower part of her where she seemed to bring back most of the mud and weeds from the Central Park rowboat lake. It required several rincings and a couple of more shampoos for the water to finally run clear.
Tina had decided yesterday to quite literally, "jump in the lake" in effort to try and herd or perhaps, simply demand notice and attention from a couple of ducks swimming peacefully.
The ducks paid no mind to Tina, but she certainly did to them.
The jump in the lake was the last part of an otherwise very pleasant excursion Tina and I took yesterday all through Central Park.....The bridal path, the great lawn and finally, Bethesda Fountain which is close to the lake popular with people who like to spend an occasional Sunday rowing in a canoe.
I particularly like the area around Bethesda Fountain.
In the 60's, it was seemingly the New York City equivalent of Haite-Ashbury as all the hippies used to hang out there, the pungent aroma of pot, a constant in the air.
These days, it is mostly an area for families, touristsor street musicians. Yesterday, some bongo players drew an interested and enthusiastic crowd.
But, Tina's focus was strictly on the birds in the lake.
I made the mistake of giving into Tina and walking her around the edge of the lake, never thinking she would suddenly decide to jump in and take off. The temperature was, after all only in the lower 40's!
Tina almost pulled me in the frigid water, as I had not removed her retractable leash.
So, I stood there for what seemed a small forever, trying to entice Tina back. But, she was having too good a time, swimming to and fro, trying to catch up to the ducks who, of course, eventually flew away.
Only then, did I finally get Tina back.
She looked like a semi-drowned rat who had just climbed from a New York City sewer.
The 25-block walk back home was, I guess, amusing, if not slightly embarrassing.
Everybody of course noticed and chuckled at the soaking wet dog whose once beautiful, "feathering" looked like long, globs of black soot.
People with pristine, little white Poodles or Bichons scurried quickly away from the gross-looking, walking blob of glob.
This is definitely, not the "look" for Manhattan's fashionable Upper East Side!
I have always bragged to others that my dog is like Teflon. "Nothing sticks to Tina!" I am fond of saying.
And indeed, I have walked Tina through snow, slush, rain and the grasses and dirt of Central Park thousands of times. By the time I get back home, she is always completely clean!
Everybody always remarks on how "clean" Tina looks, despite the fact I have only bathed her less than a dozen times over the 11 years I have had her!
Well, nobody remarked that yesterday.
I am lucky the ASPCA didn't haul me up for "cruelty and neglect" when walking Tina back home yesterday.
She was one hell of a sore sight for clean eyes.
But, unlike allthe other occasions in the past, this time Tina was the same unsightly mess by the time we finally got home.
The caked mud and black soot was beginning to harden.
So, in was in the tub for my Tina.
And some heavy duty cleaning for my couch later.
Yes, it was a fun and great day in the park yesterday.
But, sometimes when you play, you have to pay.
Tina once again looks like a beautiful, Upper East Side dog.
She is ready for her cover on Dog Fancy.
She is ready for "Best in Show" at Westminster.
(NEVER MIND THAT TINA IS A MUTT!!!!! -- NO COMMENTS FROM BREEDERS, PLEASE!)
Tina is, quite frankly, the best in the world!!
