Some Things I'd Like to See

Some Things I'd Like to See

1...On capitol case trials. Supplement the 12 peer jury with a 3 professional and trained full time jurists with legal training and judicial experience, test qualified. Both "panels" agree on guilt or no guilt before a sentence is imposed. This kind of "judgement" could prevent fiascos like that of the O.J. Simpson trial and hundreds of other lower profile trials. It could prevent the execution of those who are later found to be innocent.

2...On forest fire fighting. Instead of flying one plane or one helicoptor carrying a "thimble" full of water, send in waves of water-bearing planes to really put out the fires. Use a "shock and awe" mentality to fight the fires.

3...On 4 way stop signs. Replace most of the stop signs with only 2 yield signs.

4...On post office efficiency. I'd like to see the post office windows as efficient all day long as they are between 4:30 and 5:00 pm, as closing time approaches.

5...On leaf blowing. I'd like to see extremely stiff fines imposed for people blowing leaves out of their yards into the streets. Collection bags are availalbe to gather the leaves and dispose of them through the city trash removal.

6...On taxation. I'd like to see a universal FLAT TAX of 20% on all income regardless of salary size or any income level. If a person makes $500 per week, he pays $100 per week income tax. If one makes $2000 per week, he pays $400 per week. Each pay period the employer gives 80% to the employee and immediately sends 20% to the government. Employer keeps all records, and employee has no April 15 crisis, as he fills out no form and makes no payment. He never has his hands on the 20%, and can keep all of his 80%. This removes a lot of the red tape and payroll of the IRS department.

LOOKING BACK: I remind you to go back to previous entries on this CITIZENS LINE blog and read comments made by readers, sometimes days or weeks after the initial entry was made.

LOOKING AHEAD: In upcoming entries on this blog I will write of interrogation and torture of our terrorist captors to prevent them killing more Americans.

LOOKING TO THE SIDE: Notice the two other journals to the left of this entry and click on them to read some other incisive comments.

The Flat Tax issue is the fairest, most equitable taxation solution.  Unfortunately, it is very unlikely to ever happen because of the impact it would have to the entire tax industry.  Most, if not all, of the employees of the IRS, tax prepares, tax lawyers, etc. would suddenly be unemployeed.  But beyond that, a flat tax can only be imposed on wage earners above a certain income level.

An argument for a sales tax is extremely unfair to lower income levels and is the primary reason there is no national sales tax.  It is what is known as a regressive tax, and is commonly seen as a tool of the rich and wealthy.  As pointed out, we are all consumers, but a gallon of milk costs the same whether I earn $100 a week or $1000.  (Yes, I know, you can exclude food items from the sales tax, but what about other necessities, such as clothes, utilities, vehicles, gas, etc.)

Nohate3333 has good writing skills. Your comments are the most thoughtful and succinct I've seen on this blog! #3 was a particular concern to me, too. Suppose a pedestrian is trying to cross an intersection at a busy time in a neighborhood. It doesn't take someone running a stop sign to kill a pedestrian. Those crossing in cars may be broadsided. I used to play "Frogger," but who wants to do it for real? In addition to that problem, the drivers with the yield signs could be backed up for a block waiting for an opportunity to cross or turn so they can get to work or drop the children off at school. Manwalking50 isn't going to have the patience for that scenario, and the rest of us may be late. "A Citizens Line" as it is now would be more aptly named "Petty Blather." The original postings should be more thoughtful and better written. Written by 3334Jubilee.

The taxation item in "Some Things I'd Like to See" is something I would never want to see. You propose a 20% tax burden on all wage earners, even those barely above poverty, while wealthy, non-wage earners enjoy government services such as military protection, a highway system, environmental safety, etc., etc., that they may not even have to pay for. Many people are not wage earners, and neither do they have employers. They live off of investments, businesses, and rents. What callousness to favor taking $100 a week from someone who is trying to care for a family on $500 a week in wages while those who have plenty from non-wage sources can get a free ride. Perhaps manwalking50 should take a walk in the real world and look around!

I would favor a federal sales tax so that those who spend more would pay more in taxes. Not everyone is a wage earner, but everyone is a consumer. Those who consume more would pay more. "3334Jubilee"

    I just have to comment....

On points one and two all I can say is.....dream on.

On #3....Not real big on safety are you?  I guess you've never known anyone killed by someone running a stop sign.

On #4....Not real big on patience either, are you?

On #5....I don't disagree completely but I wonder how this could be enforced?  Plus I could think of more important things to impose "extremely stiff fines" for such as dumping trash out of ones car, throwing cigarettes on the ground, leaving shopping carts where they will roll around full parking lots, etc, etc....  At least the leaves won't harm the environment.

On #6....I just can't wrap my brain around it.  Just for fun, lets say the person that makes $500 a week has a family, lets make it 2 kids just for the sake of an average example.  He lets go of $100 of it before he even gets his paycheck.  But wait he has to pay for the families health insurance too.  Thats another $100 per week if hes lucky.  That makes his bring home $300 for the week.  But wait.  He can kiss $130 of that good-bye cause his littlest one has to go to daycare.  Thank goodness the other child is school age.  His care is only $50 a week cause he goes to the latch key program at school.  That leaves this citizen with $120 for the week.  Golly, lets add this up.  $120 times 4 weeks in a month is $480.  Hmmm....he can't even rent a tiny apartment in the bad part of town.  Sure, 20% flat tax is completely fair.....
