OVER THE HUMP DAY!

After today I only have one more day til my 3 day weekend. Wednesdays are usually pretty good days at work. Any more they are all it seems.

Last summer I barely had time to do what I did do, but this summer is a totally different story. I don’t know if that is good or bad. Our work really slows down when bad weather comes so I don’t know what I’ll be doing then.

Mean while I’ll look forward to enjoying the days at the camper and be thankful for vacation days.

I’m off to our county fair this evening after work with DD and her hubby . Hopefully, I’ll get some pictures to share.

God’s reward for our efforts is generously given and we are truly grateful. That is until we see a Johnny-come-lately extended the same generosity. ‘Not fair!’ we cry. We seethe with jealousy and fume over the apparent favoritism. ‘I’ve worked a whole day, yet she’s just worked an hour!’ ‘I’ve been an honest man my whole life, but he only reformed a few months ago!’

Through his parable of the vineyard laborers, Jesus is reminding us that we must work well and humbly in all we do through life, and not pass judgment on the efforts of others. Does not God decide how we are each rewarded for our efforts?

On reflection, Jesus’ story gives us hope rather than cause for concern. One day we just might be the Johnny-come-lately ourselves. Surely then we would welcome not a percentage, but the fullness of God’s love and forgiveness

We had another beautiful summer day to enjoy on Monday. After work this evening I’ll be going to my dulcimer get together. We usually meet once a month until January, February and March when the weather is unpredictable and cold. Then we take a break. I for one do not like to go out on cold snowy dark nights.

For now though, the weather is so nice and I try to get outside every evening even though it is mostly in my own backyard. That is until the weekend then it’s mostly outside except for sleeping. My camper is small, but that’s ok as little time is spent in it.

I try to make the most of what remains of summer because before we know it ‘cabin fever’ time will be here again.

TODAY IS…SPICEY FOOD DAY

The spices in the hot foods we eat are oily. And, we all know that oil and water don't mix. So, what can you do to cool down a hot mouth? Try one of these... Eat bread - it will absorb the oily spices. Drink milk - it contains "casein" that binds the spices and carries them away

SPICY CRAB NACHOS

2 tablespoons butter or margarine

2 garlic cloves, pealed and sliced 1/2 small onion, slices

salt and pepper, to taste

1 cup bottled clam juice

1 cup heavy or whipping cream

2 canned chipotle chiles, rinsed

1 cup (4 oz) grated Romano cheese

1 cup (4 oz) grated Monterey Jack cheese

10 oz crab meat

8 oz tortilla chips (3 handfuls)

1/2 bunch cilantro leaves (optional)

1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

2. Melt butter or margarine in a large skillet over medium heat. Saute garlic and onions with salt and pepper for about 5 minutes. Pour in the clam juice and boil until the liquid is reduced by half (2-3 minutes).

3. Add the cream and cook over high heat until thick enough to coat a spoon. Stir in the chipotle chilies and remove from heat. Put the mixture into a blender and puree. Return to skillet and stir in 1/2 cup of each kind of cheese.

4. Place the skillet over medium heat and stir in the crabmeat. Bring to a boil and immediately remove from heat. Stir in the tortilla chips.

5. Transfer to a large casserole dish. Sprinkle with the rest of the cheese. Place in oven for 5 minutes to melt the cheese. Garnish with cilantro if desired.

(Chiles are too hot for me, but the rest of the recipe sounds delicious)

A little Story your may have already heard, but it bears repeating I think…

There was a couple who went to England to shop in a beautiful antique store. This trip was to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. They both liked antiques and pottery, and especially tea-cups.

Spotting an exceptional cup, they asked "May we see that? We've never seen a cup quite so beautiful. As the lady handed it to them and suddenly the tea-cup spoke, "You don't understand" It said, "I have not always been a tea-cup. There was a time when I was just a lump of red clay.

My master took me and rolled me pounded and patted me over and over and I yelled out, Don't do that. I don't like it! "Let me alone," but he only smiled, nd gently said; "Not yet!!" "Then. WHAM! I was placed on a spinning wheel and suddenly I was spun around and around and around. 'Stop it ! I'm getting so dizzy! I'm going to be sick!', I screamed.

But the master only nodded and said, quietly; 'Not yet. 'He spun me and poked and prodded and bent me out of shape to suit himself and then...... Then he put me in the oven. I never felt such heat. I yelled and knocked and pounded at the door. " Help! Get me out of here!" I could see him through the opening and I could read his lips as he shook his head from side to side, 'Not yet'."

When I thought I couldn't bear it another minute, the door opened. He carefully took me out and put me on the shelf, and I began to cool. Oh, that felt so good! "Ah, this is much better," I thought. But, after I cooled he picked me up and he brushed and painted me allover. The fumes were horrible. I thought I would gag. 'Oh, please; Stop it, Stop it!!' I cried.

He only shook his head and said. 'Not yet!'. Then suddenly he put me back in to the oven. Only it was not like the first one. This was twice as hot and I just knew I would suffocate. I begged. I pleaded. I screamed. I cried. I was convinced I would never make it. I was ready to give up. Just then the door opened and he took me out and again placed me on the shelf, where I cooled and waited------- and waited, wondering "What's he going to do to me next?"

An hour later he handed me a mirror and said 'Look at yourself.' And I did. I said, "That's not me; that couldn't be me. It's beautiful. I'm beautiful!

"Quietly he spoke: "I want you to remember, then," he said, "I know it hurt to be rolled and pounded and patted, but had I just left you alone, you'd have dried up. I know it made you dizzy to spin around on the wheel, but if I had stopped, you would have crumbled. I know it hurt and it was hot and disagreeable in the oven, but if I hadn't put you there, you would have cracked.

I know the fumes were bad when I brushed and painted you all over, but if I hadn't done that, you never would have hardened. You would not have had any color in your life. If I hadn't put you back in that second oven, you wouldn't have survived for long because the hardness would not have held.

Now you are a finished product. Now you are what I had in mind when I first began with you. "

The moral of this story is this: God knows what He's doing [for each of us ]. He is the potter, and we are His clay. He will mold us and make us, and expose us to just enough pressures of just the right kinds that we may be made into a flawless piece of work to fulfill His good, pleasing and perfect will.

So when life seems hard, and you are being pounded and patted and pushed almost beyond endurance; when your world seems to be spinning out of control; when you feel like you are in a fiery furnace of trials; when life seems to "stink", try this.... Brew a cup of your favorite tea in your prettiest tea cup, sit down and think of this story and then, have a little talk with the Potter.

Matthew 19: 23-30

Jesus’ disciples gather around him solemnly, observing intently. Jesus’ compassionate and knowing gaze anchors the rich young man in place, taking in his eagerness and determination. His shoulders slump, the burden of opportunity at least as heavy as his coin-filled purse.

Furtive glances pass between the disciples, mirroring their growing confusion and unease. ‘If it takes more than a camel … what about us?’ The disciples’ wonderfully human and vulnerable fears are soothed by Jesus’ reassurance, reassurance that speaks to us today.

For too long, people believed God’s love was to be earned, attached to laws and external demonstrations as much as others were to their wealth. Jesus reminds us that it is God’s undying unconditional love that draws us to him—and love is what will bring us home

HAPPY MONDAY !!

Monday again ?? Already?? My 3 day weekend just flew by. It always does. Here we are a brand new week ahead. I’m always hopeful as a new day starts. We never know what surprises may be in store for us. Maybe some good, maybe some bad but each day is one to be thankful for.

I spent a lovely relaxing weekend at the camper with DS#1 and his family. I put a few pictures up for you to see in my GOOD MORNING SUNSHINE JOURNAL. The link is always at the end of each newsletter. We missed DD and her hubby, but they should be there next weekend.

I have another short work week ahead. Friday will be another vacation day for me. Then we’ll have Labor Day weekend which will be another 3 day weekend. After that I’ll have a very hard time adjusting back to a 5 day work week.

This Tuesday should be the evening I get together for Dulcimer with my friends. Next month we will start practicing our Christmas songs. It is hard to believe time is flying by so fast.

Our county fair is this week too. I don’t know if I’ll get to go or not but DS#5 and his wife will be there with a booth and he’ll be doing his caricature sketches. So we hope they’ll have a good week.

DS#2 called Sunday evening to say his trip was cancelled for this week. He was very disappointed as he had hoped to be able to spend some time with his children while he was there. He’s hoping they reschedule the conference soon.

In the faint light of the attic, an old man, tall and stooped, bent his great frame and made his way to a stack of boxes that sat near one of the little half-windows. Brushing aside a wisp of cobwebs, he tilted the top box toward the light and began to carefully lift out one old photograph album after another and his old journal.

Opening the yellowed pages, he glanced over a short reading, and his lips curved in an unconscious smile. His eyes brightened as he read the words that spoke clear and sweet to his soul as he read the inscription for Aug 18th. It stood out because it was so brief in comparison to other days. Do you wish to be perfect?

Matthew 16: 19-22

In this story, Jesus tells a man to give up his enormous wealth so he can fulfill his ideal relationship with God. The man was asked to go beyond the general principles of the commandments and take up a personal challenge.

The story inspires us to consider what might prevent us from our spiritual pursuits, and similarly adjust what may not be so valuable. For one man it was his wealth; he had to learn about giving and giving up.

Perhaps it would benefit us as well to take up an individual challenge and ask God to help us let go of our attachments. Whether these attachments are material or emotional, it might create new space in our minds for clearer perceptions and a healthier spiritual life

The children of Israel had not gone far from the shore of the Red Sea when the realities of their new freedom began to register. They no longer enjoyed the ample food and water supply of Egypt. Now, after traveling 3 days into the wilderness, the large crowd had no water. And when they finally arrived at the oasis of Marah, the water was bitter (Ex. 15:23).

Thus the children of Israel were compelled to rely on a miracle. So they cried out to Moses, and Moses cried out to the Lord. The Lord showed him a tree, which Moses cast into the water. Miraculously, the water turned sweet. The transformation of the water was a miracle akin to the plague of blood sent to Pharaoh and the Egyptians (Ex. 7:14-25).

Egypt’s clean water had been sullied with blood by the hand of the Lord. The lesson of Marah was clear—the same hand that turned water into blood could turn bitter water into sweet. The same power that brought curses on Egypt could bring health to Israel.

EVEN though Simon the Pharisee neglected to offer Jesus the customary courtesies of hospitality - foot washing, a kiss, anointing - he is appalled that Jesus would allow this sinful woman to touch him.

Jesus then tells a parable about two people whose debts were forgiven by a compassionate moneylender. One had been given a large sum and the other a much smaller amount. Jesus asks Simon which of the two would love the moneylender the most.

When Simon identifies the one who has been forgiven the most, Jesus draws parallels between the parable and the woman who has anointed his feet. A marginalized and judged woman responded to the generous love and grace of God in a way that a religious leader was unable to do.

God's way is unbound by legalism. Rather, God's way is the way of grace, forgiveness, generosity, justice, compassion, and inclusion - a message embodied in Jesus.

Like Simon, we all know what it is like to make mistakes and to think ourselves always right. But God's love and forgiveness challenge our self-righteousness. If we truly receive the freedom God's grace gives us, we will be slow to judge and quick to forgive. http://www.upperroom.org

HAPPY TUESDAY !!

In my trivia today there is a bit about Jack Nicklaus which reminded me that on the radio Monday morning they said they were at a Jack Nicklaus Scholarship golf event at the country club. My boys will remember this event as they caddied for many years there. This is supposed to be the 18th year for it.

It turned out to be a heavenly sunny day Monday with temps in the mid 70’s. Just perfect. Today should be another great one. There is not much on my calendar for after work this week. I’ll be home getting everything done so that I can leave for the campsite Thursday after work. I love short work weeks and next week I’ll have another. I’m using those vacation days while the weather is still nice. I do have a few more that I’ll use in the coming months, but these two Fridays are the only ones that are back to back.

It won’t be long and Labor Day will be here. We usually have pretty good weather through September and some good days in October and after that the camping season will be finished for this year anyway. Time is flying by.

HAPPY FINALLY FRIDAY !!

We still haven’t got our rain, but it is still in the forecast. After work yesterday I bought a new hose and water sprinkler. My old one had a leak in it. This time I got an unkinkable one. It was a little pricey but hopefully it will last longer. In the past I guess I’ve gotten the kinkable ones and always fight with them.

I had thought to clean up the downstairs some yesterday evening, but wound up outside with watering, trimming and weeding. That needed done first. Maybe next week the house will get cleaned. There are only so many hours in a day and mine are not long enough.

Tonight I’ll make the potato salad for Saturday. The eggs and potatoes got cooked yesterday evening so now all I have to do is cut it all up and mix well.

The silver streak has been making a noise like it has a hundred crickets going around in the front end so I’m having that checked out tomorrow morning before heading to DS#6’s house for the party. I didn’t want to go very far in case something was wrong. She’s also due for an oil change soon so I’ll have them take care of that while I’m there.

Thankfully it is Friday!

TODAY IS… CHEESECAKE DAY

I have no idea who invented cheesecake! But, we've got a great recipe to celebrate Cheesecake Day. It is chocolate - this means it's worth the extra effort. Surprise someone with a yummy dessert soon!

Crust

45 vanilla wafers (crushed)

6 tablespoons powered sugar

6 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

6 tablespoons melted butter or margarine

Filling

3 8-oz pkgs of cream cheese

1 1/4 cups sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla

1/2 cup sour cream

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

3 eggs

For the crust

1. Preheat over to 350 degrees F.

2. Mix together all crust ingredient in a medium bowl.

3. Press into the bottom and 1/2 inch up the sides of a 9 inch spring-form pan.

4. Bake 8 minutes and set aside to cool.

For the filling

1. Preheat over to 450 degrees F.

2. In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese until fluffy. Gradually add sugar and vanilla and beat until smooth.

3. Beat in sour cream, then the cocoa and flour. Add eggs last and just mix until blended. Pour batter into prepared crust.

4. Bake for 10 minutes. Lower oven temperature to 250 degrees F. Continue baking for 40 minutes or until set

5. Remove from oven and set on a cooling rack. Loosen the cake from the sides of the pan with a knife and cool completely. Remove sides of the spring-form pan. Cover the cheesecake and refrigerate for 4-6 hours. Top with strawberries or whipped cream before serving. Keep left-overs covered and refrigerated.

She gathered her belongings and headed for the gate,

Refusing to look back at the "thieving ingrate."

She boarded the plane and sank in her seat,

Then sought her book, which was almost complete.

As she reached in her baggage, she gasped with surprise.

There was her bag of cookies in front of her eyes!

"If mine are here," she moaned with despair,

"Then the others were his and he tried to share!"

Too late to apologize, she realized with grief,

That she was the rude one, the ingrate, the thief!

But who do you say that I am?

Matthew 16:13-23

This question, and Peter’s answer to it, represent a moment of revelation among the disciples. For Peter it came as a flash of recognition that was to give shape and meaning to his whole life. For him, it was the coming together of all the events and conversations he had experienced with Jesus.

Suddenly, it all made sense.

With the follow-up—‘You are Peter and upon this rock I will build’—he is given a nickname, one which maps out for him his future and perhaps that of the church. But for us in today’s church, so different from the small group of disciples for whom Matthew wrote his handbook of discipleship, how do we answer the question Jesus addresses to all his followers: But who do you say I am
