Pelosi- still clueless after all these years.
"I believe that the president's leadership in the actions taken in Iraq demonstrate an incompetence in terms of knowledge, judgment and experience in making the decisions that would have been necessary to truly accomplish the mission without the deaths to our troops and the cost to our taxpayers." Nanci Pelosi
Still Clueless - With unbelievable hubris, Pelosi and her Democrat cohorts believe we can just sit down with these terrorists and play a friendly game of Dominoes.
The liberals were clueless when we gave up in Vietnam - resulting in the death of millions. They were clueless in World War Two - protesting our entry into the war until the Japanese bombed us and after Hitler had already massacred millions of Jews. They were clueless with Reagan's policy of ending the cold war without even firing a shot (no more detente), and the liberals remain clueless in this war on terrorism:
From the day of our Founding, we have proclaimed that every man and woman on this earth has rights, and dignity, and matchless value, because they bear the image of the Maker of Heaven and earth,” said Bush. “Across the generations we have proclaimed the imperative of self-government, because no one is fit to be a master, and no one deserves to be a slave. Advancing these ideals is the mission that created our Nation. It is the honorable achievement of our fathers. Now it is the urgent requirement of our nation's security, and the calling of our time.
”So it is the policy of the United States to seek and support the growth of democratic movements and institutions in every nation and culture, with the ultimate goal of ending tyranny in our world,” President Bush
President Bush understands the only way to spread freedom is by spreading Democracy throughout the world. Democratic states do not attack each other. His Speech was also a warning to other nations to treat their populace with dignity. This is the way to rid the world of terrorism, and make the world a more peaceful place in which to live. The terrorists will, however, take comfort in the attacks against the President by Pelosi and the other leaders of the Democratic party. Maybe, we should just give them California since many of the terrorist's represantives reside here.
I think for the liberals to finally get it, they will need a nuclear bomb dropped on them, but then again I doubt that would even work.

Mark,
Your historical accounts are a bit lacking. We only 'gave up' in Vietnam after it became apparent that we would have had to kill just about every human in the country to get our way. We ended up killing over two million. And we made it clear that popular movements around the world would be crushed. As to World War II, it's quite clear that the United States provoked the attack on Pearl Harbor by cutting off access to raw materials Japan needed. As to the holocaust, the mainstream of liberals and conservatives were pretty apathetic about the whole thing. Don't pretend that conservatives were running around trying to save the Jews. And the idea that Reagan ended the Cold War is just more myth-making.
The President's words can only have meaning for those unfamiliar with our history. It was only last year that we kidnapped the democratically elected president of Haiti. Our participation in the unsuccesfull coup in Venezuela is well known. We have a long history of crushing popular movements towards freedom around the world: Iran, Iraq, Chile, Nicaragua, Cuba, Turkey, Greece, Spain...the list is long.

I guess we will have to see whether Bush means it -- what do you think he will actually do to bring freedom and democracy to Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea? I suspect he will do nothing about most if not all of these challenges to his stated principles.
Saudi Arabia would be a good place to start. Almost all the terrorists who attacked us on 9/11 were Saudi's, and the Kingdom is hardly one of the world's democracies.
What a grand, meaningless, speech.
When your actions produce nothing to celebrate, well-chosen words can turn a chump into a champ.
Hooray for words!

On the subject of Nicaragua, you might find this essay by Noam Chomsky enlightening. http://free.freespeech.org/am
