Here is a fun game to play!

Hello everyone!  HOw is school going this year?  I hope you are all being good and doing your homework and making straight A's and B's!  Let me know what grade you are in and how you like your new school year.  When report cards come out I would like you to post your grades.  If you show me a report card with all A's on it...there could be a surprise in it for you!!!!!

http://www.brookviewcottage.com/miles/cards/noah/noah.html

Now here is a fun game to play after you do your homework.

Have fun and remember that I am your biggest fan!

JUMP!!!

 Hopscotch

Learn to play basic hopscotch, then try Miss Barbara's way

Hopscotch is a fun game to play with your friends—the more players the better! You get to jump around, throw things, and just enjoy being outside in the wonderful summer weather.

Number of players: 2 or more.
How to win: Be the first to hop all the way through the grid.

How to play:
• Draw a hopscotch pattern on the ground or use masking tape on a floor
(click here for 3 more patterns) and number each square in order. Each player has a marker such as a stone, shell, etc.

• Stand at the begining and toss your marker in the first square. Hop over square 1 (you must skip any square that has a marker in it) to square 2.

• Hop through the grid on one foot unless there are two squares side-by-side, then you jump landing with one foot in each square.

• Hop to the end, jump and turn around 180° without leaving the grid, and hop back.

• Pause in square 2 to pick up the marker, and out.

• Toss the marker in square 2, hop through the same way, then square 3 and so on.

Watch out! You're out if:
• Your marker fails to land in the right square.
• You hop on a space that has a marker in it.
• You step on a line.
• You lose your balance when bending over to pick up the marker and put a second hand or foot down or hop outside the grid.
• You hop into a single space with both feet.

You then place your marker in the square where you will resume playing and the next player begins.

Now my way is to change the number to catagories like Fruits, Vegetables, Flowers, Names, Places, Colors, Pizza Toppings, Desserts, Birds and Sports.

See how many different catergories you can come up with.  In my version, you must name a different thing each time you jump.

For example if you have colors written on the 1 space. You must say a color every time you jump.   Like blue, green, yellow and you can not repeat a color.  Follow the same rules.

Lots of fun to play...get Mom up and moving and have her play with you.  Dad can do this too...really!

Have fun!

Let me know if you need to ask any questions about this...No matter what your parents say....they do know how to play this game....and they are not too old.

Mars

Mars

The Red Planet is about to be spectacular!

This month and next, Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter that
will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in
recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is
in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on
Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be
certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth
in the Last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as
60,000 years before it happens again.

The encounter will culminate on August 27th when
Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and
will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in
the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9
and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest
75-power magnification

Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye .
Mars will be easy to spot. At the
beginning of August it will rise in the east at
10p.m.
and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m.

By the end of August when the two planets are
closest
, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its
highest point in the sky at
12:30a.m. That's pretty
convenient to see something that no human being has
seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at
the beginning of August to see Mars grow
progressively brighter and brighter throughout the
month.
Share this with your children and grandchildren.

NO ONE ALIVE TODAY WILL EVER SEE THIS AGAIN

Thanks Jill  Lets Make Flowers!!!!

Crafts
Bright and long-lasting—Mexican tissue paper flowers add sunshine to indoor parties, outdoor buffets or your bedside table. Change the colors to fall goldens and winter whites, and you can enjoy these flowers all year long. Plus, the folding technique is so simple that this makes a fun craft to enjoy with a child. Decorate the leaves with colorful felt-tip pens, or lightly spray the finished flower with your favorite cologne or perfume. Fill a vase with multicolored blooms, lay one at each place setting as a take-home favor or use one instead of a bow to decorate a Mother’s Day gift. The handmade token will be truly appreciated.
Materials (for one flower)
4 sheets pink tissue paper, 6" x 12" each
4 sheets lime green tissue paper, 6" x 12" each
Scissors
Ruler
Green pipe cleaner
Color marker (if desired)
Spray perfume or cologne (if desired)

Instructions

1. Cut the pink tissue paper into 6” x 12” rectangles and stack in a pile of four sheets.

2. Keeping the pile together, fold the sheets along the 6” side, making 1” folds back and forth, like a fan. When you are finished, the folded tissue paper should be a rectangle measuring 1” x 6”.

3. Round the four corners off by cutting with a scissors.

4. Fold the long edge of the pile in half so that it measures 1” x 3”. Using the scissors, carefully make 2 diagonal cuts at the fold, each 1/4” from the edge, approximately 1/2” in length. (Note: be careful that you do not cut the folded tissue paper in half.) Open the fold back to its 1” x 6” shape. The shape should now resemble a bow tie.

5. Repeat steps 1 and 2 with the lime green tissue paper. Instead of step 3 (rounding off the corners), cut three sets of diagonal notches on both ends so that each side appears like a fork.

6. Repeat step 4 with the lime green tissue paper.

7. Fold a green pipe cleaner in half. Then place the folded pink tissue paper on top of lime green tissue paper and fasten together with the folded pipe cleaner. Squeeze the tissue paper in the middle and twist the pipe cleaner around to tightly secure the flower. This step also creates the stem of the flower.

8. With extreme care, fan out the pink paper on both sides of the pipe cleaner. (Be extra gentle: you do not want to rip the delicate tissue paper!) Slowly separate each of the four pink sheets, gathering each one toward the center. Behold your flower!

9. To create the leaves, fan out both sides of the lime green paper, but don’t separate the sheets as you did with the pink paper. You want to leave the leaves thicker.

10. Gently shape with your hands until you achieve your desired form.

11. For a delicate scented effect, spray your favorite perfume or cologne in the air and then waft your flower through it. (Be careful not to spray directly on the paper as doing that may make it wet.)

Diane's Tip: After step 3, I like to decorate the edges of the flower with a color marker or felt-tip pen, gently coloring the edges.

Ant it Great?

Sing....sing a song

 The Ants Go Marching Song

The ants go marching one by one,

Hurrah hurrah

On The Farm

Song and A Game

Farmer in the Dell...remember that song?

The farmer in the Dell

The farmer in the Dell

Hi, Ho, the derry-o

The farmer in the Dell

The farmer takes a wife...

The wife takes a child...

The child takes the nurse...

The nurse takes a dog...

The dog takes a cat..

The cat takes the rat

The rat takes the cheese

The cheese stands alone.

If you have a big group of children you get in a circle and one of them is the farmer in the middle.  After each verse they pick someone to stand in the middle with them.  The farmer takes a wife etc.

Things To Talk About:

1.  What is a dell?

2.  Why did each person or animal choose to take the person or animal that they chose?

For Art

Draw a farm and animal scene with your child. Have them make their own.

For Cooking

Making Butter

Materials

Whipping cream, baby food or small jars, salt, teaspoon, crackers

Okay lets make some butter

1.  Provide each child with a baby food jar.

2.  Pour two tablespoons of room temperature whipping cream in each jar.

3.  Instruct the children to shake the jar until a small ball of butter is formed.

4.  Taste the butter, salted and unsalted.

5.  Discuss where milk, butter and cheese come from.

6.  Spread butter on crackers and enjoy!

Corn Transfer

Materials, tweezers, corn kernels, two bowls

1.  Provide the children with the tweezers, corn kernals and bowls.

2.  Ask the children to transfer the corn from one bowl to another.

Okay so off the couch and away from the telly it is time to pretend that you are at the Delly!!!

Have fun!  Miss Barbara

And if any of you are doing any of these games and fun please let me know!  Send me some pictures of you fishing from yesterday or at the dell today!  I would be delighted!!!!!

Let's Go Fishing!  And Other Fun!

Fishing

Materials:  Fish cut from construction paper, round cardboard tube from a hanger, string, magnet, paper clips.

Procedure

1.  Make a fishing pole using a cardboard tube from a hanger.

2.  Tie a magnet to the string and attach the string to the pole.

3.  Place a paper clip on the nose of each fish.

4.  Encourage children to catch fish by touching the fish's nose with the magnet.

If you are feeling real creative you could get a poster board to put the fish on like a pond.  Make frogs and other things to catch like a tire tube and turtles and snakes.  You  could also let the children take turns and give each animal a point value.  Fish=5 points, tire tube=3 points for cleaning up the lake etc.  Don't make any where they lose points as this could cause tension LOL

For Cooking

Banana Boats

Materials: Bananas, cottage cheese, spoons, cherries, bowls and spoons

1.  Peel bananas and split in half

2.  Let the children spoon cottage cheese on top of the banana half and place a cherry on top.

3.  Eat and enjoy

Sing

Row, row, row your boat

Gently down the stream

Merrily, Merrily merrily merrily

Life is But a Dream.

Older children can be taught to sing it in a round.

Float a boat in the tub or pool.

I hope you catch alot of fish!!!

Love Miss Barbara

Singing Games  And Fingerplay

High-Low, Roof -Toe

Ask children to stand.  Explain that when they hear you sing or play a high note, they are to reach up to the roof; when you sing or play a low note, they are to touch their toes.  Children can take turns being the leader too!

Who Am I?

Ask children to watch closely as you pantomime playing an instrument-any instrument.  When they think they can identify the specific instrument or family of instruments, they must raise their hand.  Rememver that several instruments appear to look alike-the violin and viola for instance.  IN that case accept either answer.  Older children may write answers, or the exercise may be used as a team game.

Sing a Song!!!

Where is Thumbkin...Remember that song?

Where is Thumbkin

Where is Thumbkin

Here I am, Here I am

How are you this morning?

Very well I thank you

Run Away, Run away

Where is pointer, tall man, ringer, pinkie and the whole family.

Start with your hands behind your back and bring out each hand with the finger up.

Things to talk about:

1.  Talk about how we use our fingers, for example, for eating, for coloring

2.  Discuss how we use our hands and fingers to communicate, for example okay, pointing, thumbs up, saying Hi etc.

For Art: Fingerpainting

Materials

Drawing paper, fingerpaints

Procedure:

1.  Allow children to play with fingerpaints on a table top.

2.  Before cleaning up, help the children make fingerprint designs on drawing paper .

Developmental Bonus:  Creative expression

For Cooking: Thumb print Cookies

Materials

Frozen sugar cookie dough, sugar, red food coloring cookie tray and oven.

1.  Color sugar with red food coloring

2.  Give each child a small amount of dough to roll, flatten and place on the cookie sheet.

3.  Tell each child to stick their thumbs in the colored sugar and press a thumb print in the middle of their cookie

4.  Bake and serve

Developmental Bonus: Fine Motor development

For Outdoors: Hide and Seek

1.  have children hide and go find them

2.  Reverse roles.  You hide and let them find you!

Be a child with your children, they will remember it forever!

Love ya, Miss Barbara
