MSN Financial Times
Wal-Mart announced plans on Monday to open 550 to 600 new stores in the coming fixcal year, including 270 to 280 supercentres and 220 to 230 international retail outlets.
The expansion will add 60m sq ft of retail space to the chain's holdings - an 8 per cent increase.
Wal-Mart supercentres sell groceries as well as general merchandise and are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They also include specialty shops that offer photo processing, auto repair and eye care. The company is moving towards opening retail banking units in its stores, but the effort has met with strong opposition from US financial services groups. The company already check cashing and money transfer services at some of its stores.
Wal-Mart's discount stores, of which it plans to open 20 to 30, are smaller operations, without a full line of groceries. It will also add 15 to 20 "neighbourhood markets" and 30 to 40 Sam's Club warehouses.
