Up on the Hill

By Mark Schreiber, 2005 Colorado Milken Educator

Wow, this conference has been incredible! From all the breakout sessions like the ones that John S. wrote about to the panel discussions on Wednesday, everything has been top-notch. Barely enough time to really let it all sink in, and especially not enough time to blog about it but let me give it a shot.

This morning panel of leaders from the private sector talking about what they can do to help the education of our kids succeed was definitely thought-provoking. Great dialogue, and it really helped to inform us all about what really can and will make a difference in education in regards to public policy and the like.

Later on we went to Capitol Hill to meet our representatives, senators and congressmen from our states. This was once again a classy and high-caliber event. I had the honor to meet our representative Marilyn Musgrave and Senator Wayne Allard. Representative Musgrave was very down to earth and had a great handle on what education is about, since her family was involved in education too. I found it very interesting that both of them were so approachable and also honored to meet us! Many of the senators and congressmen and women gave short speeches praising the teachers of their state and all the teachers that they represent. It was very refreshing to me to see the heart of these politicians so touched by what we do, what I do, what all teachers do—teach.

So many of them talked about teachers in their life who had made a difference.  It seems we all have that person, that teacher, in the forefront of our mind. That little tidbit—that so many people have been touched by teachers—has really impacted me on this trip. It excites me, it spurs me on, it challenges me to be that man, that teacher who will be remembered and referred to in future conversations, as the difference-maker in their lives—maybe it will even be one of our future senators! To me that is a powerful thought, and one that I won't soon forget.
