Making some cash auctioning off digital downloads on eBay? Not anymore.

In an effort to squash feedback manipulation, the online auction
site announced recently that it will no longer allow use of its
standard auction format to sell digital downloads. As of April 1,
sellers must purchase an eBay classified ad for $9.95 a month.

"Most items that require digital delivery, once created, can be
very easily replicated," Brian Burke, eBay's director of global
feedback policy, said in a recent eBay blog post.
"This ease of replication creates the opportunity for sellers to list
thousands of the same item in an attempt to manipulate the feedback
system. It also creates a perception that even legitimate sellers of
digital goods are manipulating the feedback system. This dynamic--real
and perceived--undermines trust across the entire marketplace."

Posting an ad within the classified ad format
is similar to posting an ad on Craigslist. You list what you have to
sell, and an interested buyer can contact you via e-mail or phone. No
bidding takes place, and buyers and sellers cannot leave feedback for
one another on eBay. The listings do show up in eBay search results,
but are designated as a "classified ad."

EBay considered a number of options before relegating digital downloads to classifieds, Burke said.

Those
ideas included establishing a minimum dollar amount for digital
listings, and allowing only approved sellers to list these items.

The company eventually determined, however, that the classifieds approach was easier to understand and follow, Burke said.

EBay users can still sell CDs and DVDs via eBay auctions,
provided they are providing buyers with a tangible copy of the
material, Burke said. Transferring the content via e-mail or other
electronic transfer is prohibited, he said.

"Custom services, where the buyer and seller work
collaboratively to develop a custom designed website, will be treated
as a service, like they are today," Burke said. "A single template
page, even if customizable ... are not considered custom services and
will be required to be listed using the classified ads format."

If users have posted ads for digital downloads that end after
April 1, eBay will remove those posts and credit the seller, Burke
said.

An eBay search for "mp3 download" on Wednesday afternoon
produced 133 results, a majority of which were still offering "digital
delivery."

EBay has taken some heat recently over its feedback changes. On
the heels of eBay CEO Meg Whitman's resignation in January, eBay
announced a major revamp of its listing prices and procedures.

Those changes included stripping sellers of the right to leave
feedback for buyers. Buyers were still allowed to leave seller
feedback, but had to wait several days before posting their comments.

"Yes, we're taking away a seller's ability to leave a buyer a
negative feedback," an eBay spokesman appsc. But eBay "is the only
place certainly on the Internet and probably in the physical world as
well where a merchant would badmouth a customer publicly."

Instead, sellers will now get "additional protection," he said. "What we've done is taken that out of the public sphere."

Annoyed sellers revolted and called on sellers to boycott the
site during the week of February 18. They later extended that strike to
March 9, and are planning another open-ended eBay boycott starting May 1.

EBay said the boycotts have had no impact on its listing averages.

Tags: ebay, digital sales, digital, Classifieds, Auction, appScout

The many reason for boycotting Ebay are valid
and justified. Ebay's recent haphazardly tossed together changes are a
detriment to the site and are an arrogant corporate exibition of
incompetence.

Ebay declares to the press that they are trying to discourage
excessive shipping...yet in the next breath announce a "penny listing
day" for all sellers to post 99 cent listing(which guarantees excessive
shipping as no profit could be made otherwise).

Ebay declares that a 100% biased feedback system where ONLY the
buyer can enter their opinions about their trading partner. Ebay
mandates that the buyer receive an automatic positive...no matter how
the buyer behaves or what they do. The seller is simply told to sign
their name to the positive rating. Pointless...as anyone could readily
see....except Ebay management.

Ebay proclaimes to the press that they listened to the sellers and
are lowering fees...an outright deceprive LIE. A few cents dropped from
initial listing fees combined with a hefty increase in associated fees
equals a fee increase. Ebay should avoid treating the sellers like
morons who can not add simple numbers.

Ebay then holds a carrot on a stick for volume sellers offering them
discounts IF their ratings remain very high;..then (as was pointed out
in Ebay's own forum by a buyer), Ebay gave discount coupons to a buyer
who left negative feedback for a seller. Offering incentives to leave
negatives? The conclusion is obvious.

Ebay is treating the sellers on the site like dirt and as such
deserves every bit of negative press they get. A person has to trust
their business partner and as a seller, I DO NOT TRUST EBAY AT ALL
under their current management.

Consequently, I stopped listing in February and have no plans to
start again on their site. For me, the boycott has never stopped.

I started selling on another venue and am quite pleased with the
results so far. Ebay has lost me as an exclusive seller in the future
no matter what it does to mend fences. At best, I would list on both
sites....never again exclusively on Ebay.

Never. I will no longer recommend the site as a sales option to friends or as a buying site due to the animosity on eBAY.

Tags: ebay, abuse, boycott, seller

and bidding on auctions is free of charge, but sellers are charged to
list an ad for sale and also a percentage of the final price when the

For each transaction,
buyers and sellers can rate each other by leaving Feedback. Each

announced policy changes that are upsetting thousands of its sellers,
these changes effect how feedback & dsr's are rated and also gives eBay the right to hold Paypal funds for up to 21 days.

Many of these sellers
are the very people who are so hard hit by our current economic woes.
They are single moms trying to make ends meet. They are retired and
disabled folks who have been managing to make a little money on eBay. as a sales outlet. These small mom 'n' pop sellers, as well as a huge
number of other eBay sellers of every size and from several countries
have just completed a very successful 1-week boycott. Estimates vary
widely as to the "effect" of the strike on eBay listings, but EBay's stock is already shaky, and this uproar has not helped.

They are now calling for another and this time open-ended, MAJOR boycott beginning May 1. This is already being supported by a huge number of sellers and buyers, who are simply continuing to boycott eBay.

These sellers feel that is their only hope of keeping eBay from putting them out of business. Sadly, it looks like eBay is destroying itself in the process. The very sellers who built eBay are moving to other venues where they feel welcome and valued as customers. They are taking what eBay refers to as IT with them.

Sellers are primarily protesting over the following issues:

· Ebay intends to change the feedback system prohibiting sellers from leaving negative comments about buyers

· How detailed seller ratings (dsr) change your search results placement

· The new PayPal
policy that allows the transaction firm to hold payment up to 21 days
for a purchased item in some cases until specific criteria has been met.

During
the February 2008 boycott, different industry tracking companies
reported that eBay listings dropped anywhere from three to 13 percent.
Some took issue with eBay's
listing discounts offered during the strike, saying it is one of the
many reasons why it is extremely difficult to accurately gage the
impact these boycotts have, if any.

John Donahoe, eBay's newly elected CEO and president, has yet to take his role, and yet has caused the largest rift between eBay and the eBay community ever. Donahoe said that he wants to rid eBay of its "fleamarket" image, by eliminating those very people who made eBay
the strongest online market place in the world. The idea is that by
ridding itself of the low-priced items, they can concentrate on larger
retailers, and boost revenues with higher end items.

The boycotter’s stand is that these policy changes will crush those people who have helped create the eBay corporation, by virtually pushing out families who depend on their main source of income.
These include single parents (many with handicapped children),
retirees, disabled persons who would rather not abuse the system, but,
can still be productive members of society by working on a schedule
that suits them, students and so many others.

Boycotters say that eBay will be faced with a boycott far worse than the young company has ever seen saying that this past boycott has enabled eBay
members to unite, and become a strong force, like never before. And
while those involved with "spreading the word" none of the "leaders" of
that boycott planned it. Yet, they have become the loudest and most
vocal boycott chapters. DelphiForums is boasting message views of over 10,000 a day for the last week, and 10 of the last 13 days.

Together, these two sites are saying they are taking the time between now and May 1st to organize the largest strike, and they will not back down until either eBay
agrees to their terms, or, Donahoe is replaced, and the changes are
re-evaluated for the better of the entire community. Team leaders say
they are willing to discuss negotiations with eBay executives; but, such requests have fallen on deaf ears.

Many buyers and sellers in our area are affected by these changes. A search of all items listed on eBay with a 50 mile radius of displays over 500 items. That number fluctuates constantly, and at times would be as much as 2500-3000 items for sale.

I closed my basic ebay store on March 13, after one year. I did OK but
didnt appreciate the increase in fees in February, and fledgling

this "cancellation fee"? Anyone else know? I expect to see this on my

Ebay's recent crapola PR release that they have "understand" is pure
BS! Just another hypocritical line of crap hoping sellers are indeed as
stupid as Ebay seems to think we are.

If Eby is TRULY concerned with the opinions of sellers, they Ebay
should stop ignoring the issues and treating sellers like second class
citizens. Ebay should just cut the crap with all the wordy (and
meaningless) press releases.

The fees have increased. Period. Don't treat sellers as morons who
are unable to recognize that a nickel saved on the front end and a
dollar+ in extra fees added to the back end amounts to a fee increase.
There is no fee reduction.

The new feedback plan is abysmal. Period. It is a 100% biased
ill-conceived plan that is a recipe for extortion. If Ebay fails to
realize this, they are truly more "out of touch" than I first
realized. What moronic meeting came up with the idea that ALL buyers
will receive a mandatory positive rating...no matter what they do?
Absolute insanity. What possible reason would any seller have to bother
leaving any buyer feedback at all? It is now pointless.

I stopped listing and shopping on Ebay after they made they made the
new anti-seller policy announcements. No amount of "we hear you" drivel
will change the facts that the new policies are a SLAP IN THE FACE to
all sellers.

Ebay is losing a lot of good sellers...including myself(a member
since 1999 with 100% positive feedback and 4.9 stars across the
board). If my business is not appreciated on Ebay then it will remain
on my new selling site on eCrater. There are alternatives. Ebay seems
to think they are still the only game in town.

Not anymore. They have chosen a bad time to alienate customers with an arrogant company position and a condescending attitude.

The sellers are NOT stupid. Ebay should not treat us as such. The
other selling sites are gaining market share...as they should when a
major player screws up and mistreats its customer base. There's a
reason so many groups are posting negative comments about the current
Ebay. There's a reason sellers are leaving Ebay.

The problem is that Ebay refuses to accept the fact that the
company's management team SCREWED up. The stockholders will be they
ones to pay the ultimate price. I sold my stock in Ebay when the
current trend began to gain momentum. The dis-content within the site
was not handled well.

Ebay also ignores many issues that cost the company money...assuming
good sellers will just pay the difference. Fee avoidance? Ebay dropped
the ball on that one and has never bothered to seriously address it.
(Hint: get a simple software program to identify the habitual areas of
abuse....a first year computer programmer could handle that one. Ebay?
No progress in a decade).

Fraud? File a computer generated form with Ebay and get a computer
generated canned response....in other words...totally ineffective.

I was a loyal Ebay member who promoted the site to others. Now, I
would not recommend the site to anyone thinking about selling items.

So, as for their lame efforts to bring sellers back ...forget it.
The current Ebay climate is anti-seller and an environment that will be
impossible to avoid extortion.

Oh yea, Ebay's customer service response to feedback
extortion issue? Well, if a buyer develops an established pattern(no
specifics on that one), then Ebay might look into it. Of course, that
does NOTHING to help the numerous sellers who were viction to such an
extortionist. What is a "pattern"? Ebay plays it free and loose with
that phrase...which means there's no real protection to sellers from
such buyers(who would be able to run such extortion tactics with Ebay
protecting their own feedback...as "wonderful buyers".

Ebay, GET A CLUE. Sellers are not going to come running back for more abuse.

Tags: ebay, seller, boycott, feedback, final value fee, rules, restrictions, policy

eBay's policy changes aren't only being enacted in the US - they are World Wide -- affecting millions upon millions of people, their families, and their communities all around the world. In the U.K. (United Kingdom, or Britain, in other words), eBay is REQUIRING that Sellers take Paypal (an eBay owned electronic payment site) and NOTHING ELSE for use in electronic payments. And, of course, eBay not only gets a cut from a Seller when they LIST and auction, and another cut from the Seller (8.75% PLUS a flat fee) when the item SELLS, but ANOTHER cut from the Seller when the Buyer pays the Seller using eBay!

Cut and cut and cut and cut -- eBay steadily cuts DEEPLY into the Seller's profits nowadays -- and FORBIDS the Sellers from passing ON these costs to the Buyer either as an "eBay Sales Tax" OR through increased 'handling' costs on the shipping charges -- so there is NO WAY a Seller can show a profit on eBay anymore -- though EBAY certainly profits from the deal -- from BEGINNING to END -- and it's THIS type of behavior which is going to be the END of eBay as their "store's shelves" are emptied by the very SELLERS who stocked those shelves to begin with!

Imagine a HUGE online Walmart -- but its shelves are EMPTY and the Buyers can find nothing they want to buy.
That's going to be the "eBay of the Future"!

Anyway, enough of my 'rant' -- here's what the UK eBay Seller had to say:

Ebay's attitude towards all sellers will certainly cost them market
share. I haven't used Ebay in almost 2 months and have not really
missed them!

I moved my listings to eCrater and have had numerous sales. Ebay
postures as if they are the only game in town....when they are NOT.
Now, they ARE most expensive to use...bar none! ...with high listing
fees on unsuccessful auctions(which average out at about 60%-70%
sitewide).

The UK's main alternative seems to be Ebid, with a fairly nice growing volume.

Since my business is considered as unwanted on Ebay(even with a 1500
feedback...all positive with 4.9 stars across the board)...I will post
to other sites that appreciate my business.

Especially after reading on Ebay's forum about a buyer who stated he
was PAID a bonus for leaving negative feedback on an Ebay seller! I
guess Ebay is banking on keeping the alleged "discount for sellers with
high feedback marks" as unattainable.

Typical Ebay tripe.

Tags: UK, Seller, eBay, boycott, policies, unfair, profit, margins, Paypal, regulations, monopoly

Ebay's mafia-type behavior and arrogance concerning the
sellers...and buyers is defined across the globe. The news report from
Australia certainly defines Ebay today! It is a balanced coverage of the subject of eBay. They gave each group
a fair chance to say their piece, and eBay doesn't come out looking good, do they?!

Another Seller bailed on eBay, and I thought their reasons why were concisely stated in a very professional manner which gives YOU the reader some understanding of how eBay Sellers feel about eBay's new policy changes:

Ebay's treatment of the sellers is simply unacceptable. I stopped
listing and found another venue that I prefer, eCrater. One aspect that
eCrater has Ebay beaten is with their INTELLIGENT feedback system.

On eCrater, there is no buyer rating, as buyers do not have to be
members to make a purchase....encouraging more activity from browsing
folks. Sellers receive feedback ..however, a buyer must first complete
a verified purchase(Paypal or Google)in order to receive an email
invitation to leave feedback. Money orders do not count.

Sellers have very little fear concerning unjust feedback, such as
false claims of non-delivery. If an unwarranted negative entry makes
such a claim and the seller has delivery confirmation...then eCrater
removes the negative mark and replaces it with a positive! That site is
trying to balance the scales ...UNLIKE Greedbay, that treats sellers
like dirt.

Ebay, in its zeal to pander to every buyer in every situation
....has sold out the sellers. You have to trust your business partner,
and I do not trust Ebay at all anymore. I think they would sell me out
in a heartbeat.

When I asked Ebay specifically about blatant extortion tactics from
buyers and negative feedback left for a seller, I was told that
Ebay"could" look into the matter after that buyer establishes a history
of such behavior. What a crock! Ebay sold out the sellers on this one
...with the obvious incentive of keeping volume sellers scores low
enough to eliminate "alleged" discounts.

I'm done with Ebay under its current asinine management style.

Tags: ebay, sller, boycott, craig's list, craigs, list, craig's

            WHY NOT?? Ebay is!!

LOL
on my SELLER account...I just paid the SAME amount in seller FEEs that
my teenage son paid for his FIRST CAR PAYMENT. LOL...2 DAYS AGO I was
informed by EBAY that I don't qualify for the .99 sale...my DSRs are
too low. THE ONLY DSR's I have been DINGED ON...ARE MY SHIPPING FEES AND I SHIP FOR FREE
      I
was going to apologize for posting YET ANOTHER complaint on this
SUBJECT.... But as a decade long seller on this "venue" I WANT MY MONEY
BACK!!!
I want to file a SNAD against YOU EBAY, either that or I
will be more than happy to send you documentation of the amount of fees
I've paid YOU over the years to keep you in the place of "just a venue".
Don't listen to me...EBAY...I'm just a speck in the grand scheme of things
      But...I've
paid ALMOST as much purchasing on your sight as I have paying your
sellers fees... something to sneeze on and throw away...as you
obviously do.

While we feel your pain, we are not eBay employess. Send notes off to eBay about it.
Call your local media and let them know what eBay is doing. Do whatever it takes to be heard! All of us here are pretty upset with how things are going also.

I'm sorry, there are no ebay employees
here in the Answer Center. But I agree COMPLETELY with everything you
just stated.
Ebay
is in the midst of a huge overhaul. And they are going to be REALLY
sorry when they are finished, and they have driven away all their
sellers who stuck by them through all the years they were growing into
a large "IT" venue. With all the changes, they can kiss the "IT" factor
good-bye.

moonboo10

I wish you the best of luck. Many sellers are already
moving into new venues to sell their items. I just hang around here now
to find out the news about the asinine changes ebay is implementing. . . . there is a reason your stars are
getting dinged. Ebay is giving coupons to buyers who are dinging their
sellers. So really, they are rewarding their buyers for lying about
their sellers in their feedback and DSR's. They are doing this to
compensate the buyer for an "unsatisfactory" buying experience.
Ebay is biting the hand that feeds them, and soon that hand will be gone.

sewlady59
Well, there is a reason your stars are getting dinged. Ebay is giving

            "I SHIP FOR FREE"

Yep
you can do that , give away your item, call and email everyday and
guess what have DINGED stars!!!!!! Pretty much, we know the system is
flawed May is coming and things are going to continue to tank out.

Ebay
wants sellers to list (1 Cent listing---ooops but you don't
qualify---OUCH), and offers 10% off coupons up to 100 dollars for
customers that "complain", but heh it's all in the business plan. Sorry
you got here late it has been all the rage...
1) announce changes (too many to count)
2) fee increases FVF (66%), but no more gallery fees thanks!
3) paypal freezes (21 days!!! and when they see fit)
4) change in searches based on DSR (where do you fall)
5) feedback changes in May no more negatives for buyers

Oh---it
is just sad---sellers at large have suffered for the same scum sellers
that have made things a horror and ebay turned a deaf ear to..... All
pretty sad and true welcome to be upset you have ALOT of company here
best wishes Carol

After several weeks of some very creative suggestions, the folks over on Delphiforums.com/boycottebay have voted for the logo for their newly minted organization.

This organization, appropriately named the "Internet Auction Alliance" is a historical FIRST -- the FIRST time that Sellers and Buyers from all walks of life, both PowerSellers and small time "once and awhile" sellers from eBay have banded together as a cohesive and functional unit to do battle with eBay about the changes in policy which eBay begain rolling out on Feb 1, 2008 -- and has continued to roll out since then.

According to eBay executives, the once mighty online auction and fixed price format marketplace has rolled out only an eighth of their proposed changes which, thus far, have enraged the Sellers by cutting deeply into their profit margins and getting rid of the field of fair play for which eBay was once famous. No longer are Sellers allowed to leave a scam artist 'buyer' negative (or even neutral) feedback on a rip-off buyer - indeed, eBay says that Sellers can leave ONLY positive feedback for a Buyer, no matter what the Buyer does! This is beyond ridiculous, and has forced another historic first: the first time that a company has faced not ONE, but TWO customer boycotts in less than 3 months!

Needless to say, as a supporter of the eBay boycott who was suspended (along with my entire family) for publishing a "Seller's Guide to non-eBay Auction", I encourage YOU - eBayer or NOT -- to head on over to http://forums.delphiforums.com/boycottebay to join the war party intent on making eBay come to it's senses and roll back the new policies which have contaminated eBay with a series of rip-off artists, scammers, hackers, and other unscrupulous persons, for eBay is NO LONGER a SAFE place for anyone to trade, and the impacts of it's new policies have affected not only eBayers, but the employees of Powersellers, eBayer families, and the communities they live in.

Boycott eBay! And Boycott Victoriously!

aoljpictureUpload, aoljpictureUpload_1
