This is taken from a song which is featured in the move "The Guys". I post it here in tribute to the Firefighters of the FDNY who lost their lives five years ago today, especially those who I was lucky enough to have known and worked with over the years.

"The Dawning of the Day" is abeautiful song. Here are the lyrics:

This morning early I walked on
while my darling was in a dream
The last sweet days of summer bloomed
and dressed the trees in green
Then soaring high in the gleaming sky
from far across the bay
came a fearsome roar from a distant shore
at the dawning of the day

Then I called my men to follow me
knowing well that the view was dim
Though tired and worn, how they fought all morn'
as time was closing in
And my heart was sad though sore with pride
for brave lads all were they
As the angels fly, how they climbed so high
on the dawning of the day

But the edge is moving nearer now
inside the fading sun
and calling, calling out to them
my brothers, one by one
But only dust silence sounds
The ashes float away
as the twilight ends and the night descends
'til the dawning of the day

Forgive me love, I'm going now
so very far away
When darkness falls, only think me near
and do not be afraid
And please don't grieve when I am gone
Abide in what remains
'til the shadows end and we meet again
on the dawning of the day

For when shadows end,
we shall meet again
on the dawning of the day

Today the feline world lost a wonderful friend, Mosby J. Kat, or Kat for short. Kat came to live with me on Easter 2005. Cold, wet, skinny as a sack of bones Kat eventually came to like being an indoor animal after months (how many, who knows) of living outside. Kat and I became fast friends and I was always welcomed by his meows of greeting when I came in the door. Like me he liked Chilli Cheese Fritos and duck. He also had a taste for hot dogs and tuna fish juice. Kat passed away today after a brief bout of kidney problems which zapped him of his strength and in the end, his will to carry on. Even though he had not communicated with anyone at the Vets, he gave me a meow when he saw me earlier today, but he was obviously in pain and had given up. I promised Kat we would go home after he went to sleep and that he would not feel anymore pain and would be able to do all the things he loved to do, from walking around outside, to sleeping on the bed. With that, Kat was ushered into a backroom and eventually gave up his ghost. I hope his time here was a pleasant one and he knew how much he will be missed.

You will be coming home very soon Mr. Kat, and you will feel no more pain.

I have been detailed off to a new job which should cut way back on my travel, and increase my late hours at work. I won't get into the details, but it is still in DC.

Well, with my return home from Louisiana last week, this past week has been nothing if not long and involved. I was down in St. Pete to do the tv thing the first part, then headed up to Pittsburgh/Morgantown to see the Pirates play two games and the Mountaineers play against Virginia Tech. Pics are posted on the fotki site, as are some new ones of Boiling Springs and Gettysburg. Just hit "What's New".

Not only is that the title of Phil Collins best album (yes, album), but it best describes my recent return and departure (much as Phil has intended the album title to reflect his busy travel schedule). If you have not listened to it, go get yourself a copy, I especially like "I cannot believe it's true", great drumming.

So, where now? St Petersburg, FL of course. I have to do a tv show for work, then fly right back. Feel free to tune in: http://terrorism.spcollege.edu/NEW/Index.aspx?login=clear

A special thank you to anyone who has filed through my post Katrina New Orleans pics. Today alone over 2000 of you did, making the most visited spot on Fotki, thanks!

as much as I wanted to keep Dawg, I knew I could not right now. I had someone come over and take him away a few minutes ago. It is terribly sad after all we ahd been through, but Kat was not too pleased and he was not housebroken and I am on travel twice next week....what kind of life is that for him? Though I have tears in my eyes as I write this, I know it was for the best.

Well, me, Dawg and kat are all here back in Fairfax. Unfortuantely Dawg has been living in a house for 28 days by himself and I am sure is not housebroken, so he gets to sleep in the backyard tonight. I will try to find him an owner soon, but tomorrow morning it is back to work for me........blech

There are new photos at my Fotki page, not many, a few. many are of a friends house I checked up on, others just of stuff....http://public.fotki.com/Squirrel-Nutkin/new_orleans-post_katrina/

I went back to NO today, last time on this trip, and had to go see if the dog with the chain padlocked to its neck had been rescued. To make a long story short, no, he hadn't. Someone had cut the chain shorter, but he was still there. What would you do in that situation? Well, it had been a week since I had seen the dog and who knows how much longer before that before he had been fed or anything, so I followed my heart and threw him in the car and drove him back to Baton Rouge. Now, what do I do with him? the shelters here are full and I am trying to find someone to take him, but it is hard. I feel I am taking home tomorrow and trying to place him in the Northern Virginia Area. He is a brown and black german shepard, less than a year old and very loving. He has taken to me rather quickly and gets very excited when I come around. I am sure he would make someone a great pet, but I am not sure if that someone is me or not. Anyone want a dog?

Also, it appears some people have been looking at my Fotki pics because I have now exceeded my alloted traffic by 7%, so it has shut down until tomorrow. Thanks for stopping by and more pics will be made available shortly, I took a bunch more today.

Stay dry.
