Feeling Quiet
Emails & Messages Part 2
This is not directed to anyone in particular, but it is a topic that has to be addressed.
Instant Messages
You either love them or hate them or wish that AOL would get their shit together and keep up with Yahoo Messenger. Yahoo is the best! Why? Because they have "stealth" settings. You can remain invisible to everyone on your buddy list, or to just a few, it's your choice. It also allows you to instant message with someone even though you appear as invisible. AOL only has the away message. Sure you can create as many away messages as you want, but you can't instant message with someone while your away message is on.
Instant messages have become a problem because not everyone wants to chat while they are online and some people tend to get offended when you say, "sorry, but I can't chat now." The fact is, not everyone is online for the same thing. Some of us are working, while others are surfing the net or just bored.
The most annoying thing is when you first log on to AOL and your computer hasn't even had a chance to finish loading itself when the instant messages start popping up. If you are one of those people that sends a message the second you see one of your buddies log on, please stop doing that. You may see that your buddy is online, but your buddies computer hasn't completely opened up AOL so then what happens in most cases is that while that message is trying to pop open at the same time that AOL is still opening up, everything slows down or it just freezes, and there have been times when I've been booted off all together! Besides that, you're not giving your buddy enough time to put the away message up if he or she is not able to chat at that time.
I work from home and I'm online almost 16 hours a day because it is necessary for what I do. Believe it or not, companies use the instant messengerfor business reasons (AOL only) because it's faster than using the phone or a fax machine, and it's also convenient. The AOL buddy chat is also being used as a way to have a conference call, except without the phones. This is why most of the time it's NOT POSSIBLE to put your away message on. So basically, don't assume that your buddy is available just because you don't see an away message, and don't get offended if your buddy can't chat at that moment. The best thing would be to send a short email and ask if that person has time to chat.

Thanks to Chris for this lovely tag.

If someone has something to tell me, or something they need to know, I don't mind IMs. But it drives me nuts for someone to IM me and have nothing more to say to me than "Hi." Then I have to figure out some kind of small talk to make with them, and I hate small talk.

Mandy, I admit I sometimes send an IM when I see a friend come online because I just like to say hello and see how things are going with them. Guess that is just me , sorry if I ever IMed you at a wrong time, Love Ya and Hugs Lisa

I agree with you on this topic also. I home school and we use the computers for a major part of school. I hate getting bombarded with IMs.

It must be a nightmare to get im'ed all the time when you're trying to work! No wonder you stay hidden, I didn't know you could, will have to find out more. I don't mind the odd im, from one friend in particular, we chat a lot, but I get a lot of unwanted im's, which I don't like (not from anyone in J'Land), these are a nuisance. Another good point raised.

Part 2 was even better than part 1...LOL There have been several times that people have gotten mad at me for not responding to an instant message. It's total BS! Like you, I'm online quite a lot for school and once I complete school I will also be working from home as a medical transcriptionist. Anymore, I also use Yahoo Messenger because of all the great features. It's fantastic! And now that I have a webcam I can talk to my Dad, my sister, see the grandbaby, chat with friends and get to see everyones smiling faces :). And I never have problems with Yahoo......NONE.
Thanks for this great entry!
Hugs,
