Feeling Quiet

She's All Grown Up

I'm so proud of my baby Cathy. She is donating blood today at her school. She wanted to do it last year, when the Red Cross was there, but she had to be 16 to be able to donate blood.

I'm ashamed to admit that when she came home a few days ago with the papers for me to sign, I almost said no because I felt she was too young and I was worried about something happening and me not being there. I even took a couple of days to think about it before I signed the permission form. Her dad's reaction was, "absolutely not," but we talked it over and realized that if she was old enough and mature enough to decide to donate blood so she could possibly save a life, then we had to respect her wishes and let her do what her heart wants to do. She already signed up as an organ donor when she went for her driving permit, so there is no way we could've said no to her donating blood. My baby is all grown up and I know I have to let go and stop being so over protective, but it's not easy.

Mandy, you should be beaming.  What a wonderful daughter you have!  It's nice to read that there are still kids these days who think of others.  Stand proud, mama!  HUGS  Chris

What a wonderful thing she did.  I would have been a bit worried also but teens are usually better off than adults when donating blood.  HUGS  Chris

I found your journal through looking at the suggestions for VIVI nominations.  I thought I would check some of the journals out.
I just wanted to say thank you to your daughter for giving blood.  Please tell her thank you for me.  My husband is going through several illnesses right now where he needs blood (two bags of it) every five days to stay alive.  About a month and a half ago, he was needing seven bags of blood each and every day.  People like your daughter kept my husband alive.  Okay, so I am crying now.  He continues to stay alive because of people like her.  Please let her know, and thank you for allowing her to do this.

That is so grown up of her!!  And I think you guys did the right thing by signing the permission slip, I probably would have had a hard time deciding too, but I liked the part about how you felt that if she was mature enough to make the decision that she wanted to donate blood that you guys had to respect her wishes.  You guys sound like awesome parents!!

I wonder why it is that it's easier to get youngsters to give blood than the older folks. It wouldn't even occur to me unless I read about it in someone's journal, or see an ad od the tube, and by then I'm in my p.j.'s
