Feeling Quiet

thick potato-peelings

I'm preparing our family holiday meal for this evening, and of course, we'll have mashed potatoes.  Real ones, not instant.

As I peeled the potatoes, I noticed how hard I was working at keeping the peeling as thin as I possibly could, as I always do.  While doing that, a memory was jogged, and I realized there's a reason why I make such  an effort.

At sometime during my childhood, we had Sunday dinner at someone's house.  Whoever the lady was preparing the meal peeled the potatoes far too thick for Mother's liking, although of course she said nothing to her.

"Lands sake," Mother said later, on our way home, "She threw half the potato away!"

That was forever imprinted upon me so that even today at the age of 62, I make every effort to keep those peelings thin.

Sounds like what my momma and nanny would say and it's funny cause everytime I'm peeling (and I use a knife) I hear that same voice.

That reminded me immediately of Daisy, a woman I worked with years ago as a nurse' aide in a nursing home. I liked to bring apples and my little peeling knife my grandfather had given me - I would just barely get started peeling  the apple before Daisy would grab it and the knife. According to her if she let me continue - there would be nothing worth eating! And then she would take her "cut" - I loved that woman dearly!

There are many "wasteful" habits that have crept into my lifestyle that Mother calls to my attention.  A quote I learned in real estate school is "Time is Money" has had some influence on me as well.  But the one thing that I CANNOT shake is the one drilled into me by Mother....EAT EVERYTHING ON YOUR PLATE....C.Y. didn't have this said to him and he has no problem leaving things.

My gosh, Donna, I am the same way~! lol  And, it's because of my mother, also.  I remember helping her peel potatoes once, and I of course, I was new at it (and it does take some finesse'), so was peeling the potatoes way to thick!  She said the same thing... and she told me "the same thing goes for cucumbers or apples!"  So, to this day, I am a very thin potatoe peeler, and I use a knife, not a potato peeler! lol  Isn't that funny, the things that come to our minds while we are doing some paltry chore? lol

    Merry Christmas, Donna!

I never mind peeling potatoes and I like to do it with a potato peeler not a knife. I love potatoes fixed any way. Merry Christmas, Paula
